We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the late Mr. S. R. Nathan, and to the citizens of Singapore, on the passing of the former President. Mr. Nathan passed away at 9.48pm tonight at the Singapore General Hospital, aged 92. He suffered a stroke on 31 July this year, and had been in critical condition since.
Born in Singapore, the late Mr. Nathan had spent his childhood in Muar, Johor, where his father was based. He later joined the Singapore Civil Service and rose through the ranks. Mr. Nathan returned as the Singaporean High Commissioner to Malaysia from 1988 to 1990, before being made Ambassador to the U.S.A.
As a High Commissioner and President, Mr. Nathan had contributed much to the friendship of Malaysia and Singapore, as well as to ties between the people of both nations. We honour his life-long service to his country in various capacities, including finally as the Sixth President of the Republic.
May Mr. Nathan’s family take comfort in the knowledge that his life had been well lived, and his work is being cherished by fellow citizens of Singapore and beyond. Rest in Peace, Mr. Nathan.
