Today 30 January 2024, marks the 100th birth anniversary of renowned meditation teacher, the late Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka. Born on 30 January 1924 in Burma to a conservative Indian family, he moved to India in 1969 and started teaching meditation. His teaching emphasized that the Buddha’s path to liberation was non-sectarian and universal.
Seven years later, in 1976, he opened his first meditation centre, Dhamma Giri, in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, and in 1985 founded the Vipassana Research Institute at Dhamma Giri. With the subsequent establishment of dozens of meditation centres around the world, Acharya Goenka has a large following globally, including scores of devoted practitioners in Malaysia.
As beneficiaries of his teachings, let us honour him is by practicing diligently what he taught us. We are most grateful to Goenkaji, and wish him the most blissful peace. SOTTHI.
