Today marks the 87th birth anniversary of the late Venerable Professor Dr. Kakkapalliya Anuruddha Nāyaka Thero, a foremost Buddhist and Pāli language scholar. He was born on this day in 1929, in a small village in north-western Sri Lanka. He was ordained a novice monk at a young age, and later received the higher ordination as ‘bhikkhu’ at age 20.
The late Ven. Anuruddha excelled as a student at Vidyalankara Pirivena – a prestigious monks’ training institute in Sri Lanka. He later obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom. Ven. Anuruddha was appointed the first Vice-Chancellor of the Buddhist and Pāli University of Sri Lanka, a post he served from 1982 to 1988. After retiring from the university, Ven. Anuruddha taught Buddhism in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Ven. Anuruddha passed away in September 2013 at the age of 84. He was the Pāli teacher of Nalanda founder, Bro Tan. As such, Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia pays deep tribute to the late venerable on this occasion, and dedicates the merits of our educational activities and wholesome deeds to his happiness and peace.
