On Saturday 28 February, a busload of enthusiastic teachers, students and volunteers from Nalanda Free School (JB) set off for their first outing together to a few places of interest. Their first destination was a farm in Ulu Tiram, where they learned how to grow vegetables from seedlings till the harvesting stage. By courtesy of the farm-owner, everyone got the opportunity to harvest their own “rose lettuce” using the “two-finger method”.
Next stop was the Kite Museum at Bukit Layang-Layang, a specialty museum dedicated to the traditional Malay kite – “Wau”. Besides seeing the large collection of traditional kites in all shapes, colours and designs, participants also learned the art of making kites. The students were delighted to watch the Annual International Kite Festival which featured kite-flyers from fifty countries who showcased their colourful and creative kites, as well as their incredible kite-flying skills. Our students had a good time flying their kites too!
The final destination of the day was the Kong Kong Jetty. Our students shared that this was indeed an educational and enjoyable trip for them as the camaraderie amongst students, teachers and volunteers was further cemented. Sadhu anumodana to the earnest organisers of Nalanda Free School JB!
