The replica of Sanchi ‘Torana’ is right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

The next time you visit Brickfields area, look out for a replica of the Buddhist masterpiece of Sanchi right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur!  The original structure of the ‘Torana’ (ceremonial gate) at the Great Stupa of Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, India was built by Emperor Asoka Moriya 2,300 years ago to honour the Lord Buddha.  It is one of the most elaborate and impressive Buddhist archeological findings in the world.

The replica ‘Sanchi Torana’ in Kuala Lumpur is a gift from the Indian government to Malaysia as a mark of friendship between both countries.  This special gift was first announced by former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his visit in 2010.

The original, magnificent Great Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi, India, was built by Emperor Asoka Moriya 2,300 years ago to honour the Buddha.

The ‘Torana’ is about 10 metres high and 7.3 metres wide.  The structure is covered with sculptured sandstone blocks carved in India.  The ‘Torana’ was inaugurated earlier today by visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Malaysian counterpart.

The original Sanchi ‘Torana’ was covered with elaborate sandstone carvings depicting Buddhist stories.
