At least 142 people were killed early today when a Patna-Indore Express train derailed near India’s northern city of Kanpur. Over 150 passengers were injured, 58 of them seriously. Sadly, more than 70 passengers could still be trapped in mangled rail cars.
According to official sources, 14 carriages in a 23-car train derailed around 3 a.m. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash or how many people were traveling on the train. Although railway officials said that there were 1,200 people on board, the real number of passengers could have been higher, as many might have traveled without valid tickets.
We express our deepest condolences to the families of casualties in this horrific incident. May the trapped passengers be swiftly and safely rescued, while the wounded recover from their shock and injuries. Let us all pray for the victims and their loved ones tonight.
