Tagging 4,000 books in a day

Librarians scanning and accounting for every book in the library in their stock-taking exercise.

On Wednesday 18 October, Pustaka Nalanda (the Library) embarked on its annual stock-taking exercise by five librarians with the help of volunteers.  This exercise is part of a good library management system whereby all books are physically located, examined and repaired where necessary, accounted for, and placed back at the proper shelves.

On the first day of the stock-take, the seasoned librarians managed to process 4,000 books in the English Section in 7 hours.  They also did housekeeping work by cleaning the library and making it more conducive and comfortable for visitors.

The annual stock-take will be extended to Pustaka’s branch libraries at NEO Centre Johor Bahru (21 – 22 October); the Chinese and Reference Section of Nalanda Central Library (28 October); and at NEO Centre Sungai Petani (3 – 4 November).  After which, the exercise will be continued at Nalanda Youth Library and NEO Centre Kuala Lumpur.

Pustaka Nalanda’s role is to provide proper learning resources on Buddhism, and to support the programmes organised by Nalanda Institute, Dhamma School, Youth Centre, and Nalanda branches.  Its main catalogue contains more than 5,100 titles mainly in English and Mandarin, but also books in several foreign languages.  The most precious resources include three complete sets of Pāli Tipitakā, a set of Buddhist Encyclopaedia, and several scholastic publications.

The public can access the library collection at Pustaka Nalanda Catalogue.

Nalanda Youth Library collection can also be accessed at Youth Library Catalogue.
