It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we announce the passing away of Venerable T. Sangharatana Nāyaka Thero earlier today, 17 March 2018. He was well regarded for his social service in Bangalore, India, as the founding member of the Maha Mahinda Dhammaduta Propagating Society, which serves the socio-welfare needs of the lower strata of Indian people.
Ven. Sangharatana was born in Sri Lanka and ordained as a novice monk at the age of twelve. He obtained his Master of Philosophy (Buddhist Studies), and later a Doctorate from the Delhi University. Ven. Sangharatana served as abbot of Pitaramba Vihāra in Bentota, Sri Lanka, and founded the Bentota Buddhist Social Welfare Institution. He also authored several books, such as ‘Poems for Children’, ‘Devotional Songs for Children’, and ‘Buddhism – The Thirst Quencher’.
