On Sunday 25 August, a memorial service was held at Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC) Leh – Ladakh, conducted by Ven. Sanghasena. 35 Nalandians, led by Nalanda founder Bro. Tan, were present to personally honour our dear sisters – G. G. Tan, Julie Ang, Jennie Cheong, and Lee Ah Yem – who lost their lives in a tragic accident whilst on a charitable mission there.
Bro. Tan and Datuk Charlie Chia recollected the virtues and qualities of our four Dhamma sisters, as well as the intense moments following the accident including the emotional challenges faced by family and friends. With much appreciation, they also recalled the unconditional assistance extended by Ven. Sanghasena and many parties in Ladakh, Delhi and Malaysia during the recovery.
The Buddha taught that life is uncertain, whilst death on the other hand is certain. Many people are forgetful of this. We should be mindful however, that the purpose of a meaningful life is to be useful and helpful to others; by serving our communities and benefitting the world. Our usefulness defines our value. One who is invaluable in the eyes and hearts of others, will experience happiness as an effect.
Nalanda Buddhist Society pays tribute to our dearly departed sisters whose qualities of loving-kindness, selflessness, generosity, and diligent learning have inspired many on the path of Dhamma. Wherever they are, may they be free from harm and danger. May they be well and peaceful.
