Today 11 December 2021, is Nalanda Education Day. This date marks the anniversary of the launching of Nalanda’s “Education Philosophy” – which calls for a holistic approach in education, balancing and combining knowledge, skills, values and culture, hence leading to integral development of people.
This holistic approach to education is very similar to planting a tree and ensuring its healthy growth. Knowledge is like knowing the species we are planting, how it grows, and its suitable conditions and climate. Skills are like planting it properly without damaging its roots or branches, and planting it upright. Values are the regular watering and fertiliser we provide which nourishes the tree. Culture is like the soil – if the tree is planted in suitable soil, it will grow healthily and soon become a refuge to many beings.
We take this opportunity to thank all our Dhamma teachers and spiritual guides for nurturing us properly on this path of spirituality. We thank them for their compassionate teachings and guidance over the years that provides us shade and refuge. Let us wish our teachers peace, happiness, and success in their noble pursuits!
