NEO KL Centre redevelopment underway

NEO KL Centre redevelopment underway

The architect’s 3D drawing of the new Centre enables us to see the potential of this avenue as an enabler towards the propagation of Buddha-Dhamma.

In 2011, Nalanda opened its first Education & Outreach (NEO) Centre in Happy Garden, Kuala Lumpur, catering to the Buddhist population in its vicinity such as Happy Garden, Taman OUG, Bukit Jalil, Sri Petaling and Kuchai Lama for the local community to learn and understand the Buddha’s teachings.

Over the past decade, NEO KL has hosted many educational programmes including Sunday Dhamma lessons, Free School tuition classes, meditation sessions, educational workshops, seminars, and the monthly Pindacāra (monks going on alms-round) programme.  It also hosts communal festival gatherings during Chinese New Year and Mid-autumn celebrations.  The overwhelming interest in its programmes has grown steadily and propelled the need for the single-level facility to be expanded.

The redevelopment of NEO KL was mooted in 2019.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, construction work could only start in April 2021 with intermittent delays due to lockdown controls.  As at June 2022, construction is almost 80% complete, and full completion is expected by September 2022.

The view from the back shows the spaciousness of Level 2, which will cater to programmes such as meditation sessions and Dhamma School.

The front of NEO KL is designed with simplicity in mind. The elegant black vertical louvers will also provide shade whilst allowing enough light to brighten the interior.

The expanded 3-storey learning centre will be able to host multiple programmes simultaneously with a capacity of 200 people, four times its previous occupancy.  With a built-up space of 4,500 sq. ft. its facilities includes a library & resource centre, teaching & meditation hall, activity rooms, a management office and meeting rooms.
