It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we observe the passing of Most Venerable Master Hsing Yun on Sunday 5 February 2023, at the age of 96. Born in Jiangsu Province, China, he received full ordination at the age of 15 and dedicated his life to propagate the Dhamma as a global citizen.
A doyen of Humanistic Buddhism, Ven. Master Hsing Yun founded Fo Guang Shan, Taiwan in 1967 to propagate Dharma through culture, foster talents through education, benefit society through philanthropy, and purify human minds through spiritual cultivation. He had also established over 300 temples, five universities and dozens of schools and educational institutions across the world. His philanthropist work of establishing shelters, hospitals and outreach programmes continues to provide relief and comfort to disadvantaged groups.
Ven. Master Hsing Yun was also a prolific writer and authored over one hundred books on how to bring happiness, compassion, and wisdom into daily life. His works ‘Life of Sakyamuni Buddha’ and the sixteen-volume Fo Guang Buddhist Dictionary have both won Taiwan’s highest humanitarian awards. His tireless efforts have inspired and forever changed the lives of many.
Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters at Fo Guang Shan in paying tribute to a great monk, teacher and humanitarian. Let us all dedicate merits to the late Ven. Master Hsing Yun – may he attain the bliss of Nibbāna and be liberated from Suffering. Santī, Peace.
