On Sunday 27 October, Nalanda Teenage Dhamma School facilitators and students extended their service in a hands-on recycling project focused on environmental responsibility and sustainability at the Taman Permainan & Rekreasi Tasik, Sri Serdang. This initiative is part of the ‘Karuna Project’, whereby after a year of learning in Dhamma School, students put the knowledge, skills, values and culture they learned into action. This wholesome activity to clean public spaces and collect recyclable items helped students to understand more about service, civic duty and handling of recyclable materials.
Equipped not just with cleaning tools, but more importantly an understanding of the values underlying this effort, students learnt for themselves that selfless service is the act of helping others without expecting anything in return. They also reflected that care for the environment begins with ourselves and shared ways to implement more sustainable practices in their lives.
Let us rejoice in these considerate efforts of our teenagers who showed care and compassion for each other as they braved the humid weather. May we also join their efforts with small actions in our daily life to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable world.
