Reflection by Bro. Yeo DiSheng
On this 8th day of Lunar New Year festivities, gatherings continue as Hokkien families organise large celebrations to welcome the Hokkien New Year. These gatherings are lively and heartwarming, just as the reunions have been in the past week when we are surrounded by our loved ones and friends who each add their unique presence to the celebration.
While these festivities are filled with laughter and goodwill, they can also bring the occasional “interrogation” sessions especially from family members who are curious about our lives. We may feel these as intrusive, but we can turn these moments around to see them as expressions of care and interest — they simply want to catch up and stay connected with what is happening in our world.
It’s also common to hear about others’ accomplishments or new milestones in life, such as personal achievements or material possessions. Be wary of feeling envious, comparing successes or belittling them, instead offer them our sincere joy and recognition. Heartfelt acknowledgment can mean a lot to someone who has worked hard to reach their goals. When we celebrate others’ successes, we also spread positivity.
As celebrations continue and also throughout the year, let us keep our mind & speech sincere and rejoiceful so that we be joyful and at peace in every moment.
