Happy Young Adults learn effective communication and listening skills

Sis. Paru advised that listening skills are very important in order for us to communicate appropriately and effectively.

On Tuesday 22 April, the young working adults group continued their learning about ‘Building Effective Communication and Active Listening’ with Sis. Paruadi Ramasamy at Nalanda Education & Outreach Centre in Happy Garden.  They explored three important skills, being 1) reading the room and paying attention to non-verbal cues to better understand the context 2) logical and analytical reasoning to draw valid conclusions and digest information logically, and 3) asking questions in the right way and in carefully thought-out words.

Sis. Paru also advised us to only communicate when it is factual, true, beneficial, endearing and agreeable at the right time, as taught by the Buddha in the Abhayarājakumārasutta (MN 58).  We develop these skills through time, with mindfulness and awareness of our speech, thoughts and actions. Being effective in our communication develops us to become an individual who is dependable, trustworthy, truthful, consistent and capable in our work and personal lives.

Sis. Loh Pei Qi hosted the programme at NEO Centre KL.

Joyful learning and reflection.

The youths discussed how they can use these skills at work.

We would like to thank Sis. Paru for her insightful sharing and practical steps to develop strong communication and listening skills. We look forward to the next session on Tuesday April 29 with Sis. See Hui Shien. See you then!
