On Sunday 16 February, Bro. Tan Huat Chye delivered an insightful Dhamma Talk on ‘Respect’, one of Nalanda’s Eight Core Values, during Service Sunday.
Bro. Huat Chye shared that the underlying principle of ‘Five Precepts’ is respect. For instance, the first precept of abstaining from killing is actually to respect the right for others to live. Bro. Huat Chye also quoted a few sayings of the Buddha that emphasize on building a respectful relationship. For example in ‘Sigalovada Sutta’, the Buddha explains that a respectful relationship between parents and children is crucial in bringing about harmony and happiness in a family.
“Respect must be earned,” said Bro. Huat Chye. He encouraged everyone to cultivate the Core Value of Respect firstly within oneself, before expecting it from others. We thank Bro. Huat Chye for spending time with us, and we look forward to another fruitful session with him in future. Sadhu anumodana!
