On Sunday 23 February, Bandar Utama Buddhist Society (BUBS) celebrated a significant milestone as the first prostheses centre of its kind in Malaysia was officially opened at Uttama Bodhi Vihāra in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.  BUBS’ “Limbs for Life” Project is a noble effort to provide amputees with artificial legs so that they can walk again.  The gift of prostheses is actually a gift of mobility, freedom, and self-confidence for many!

The “Limbs for Life” Project was conceived last year after a visit by BUBS members to a similar centre in Thailand, under the auspices of HRH The Queen Mother’s Foundation.  After a round of official discussions and fund-raising, the prostheses centre was built at one part of Uttama Bodhi Vihāra building.  The prostheses are made and fitted to amputees in situ, with the help of specialist staff and volunteer orthopedic doctors.  The artificial limbs are lighter, more comfortable to wear, and more economical compared to commercially-available ones.
