On Wednesday, 4 September 2013, Pustaka Nalanda invited Bro. H S Tan to conduct a special meditation session and deliver a Dhamma Talk as part of the on-going Ajahn Buddhadasa Commemoration Programme. Quoting several discourses from the Anguttara Nikaya, Bro. Tan spoke about the qualities of an ‘elder in the Dhamma‘. One is reckoned an ‘elder in the Dhamma‘ not by seniority in years; rather it is by the degree of virtue, true understanding of the teachings, meditative attainments, and penetrative wisdom.
Throughout our lives, we should live diligently by honouring the Dhamma, and strive not to ‘transgress’ it. The Buddha taught that one may undertake the wrong course of actions due to desire, hatred, delusion, or fear. He who has unwholesome conduct ‘transgresses the Dhamma‘. On the other hand, if he strives to ‘live by the Dhamma’, then he will progress spiritually. Bro.Tan ended his talk with an inspiring reminder to everyone to live life with honour, grace and wisdom, thus fulfilling our true potential as human beings.
