Day of remembrance and gratitude

Thursday 31 August marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of Nalanda’s late spiritual adviser, Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda, as well as being Malaysia’s 60th National Day.  Nalanda founder Bro. Tan delivered a Dhamma talk on gratitude to commemorate these two occasions.

Final farewell to a beloved monarch

The Royal Cremation ceremony for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand will take place on 26 October.  We join people across the world in bidding him final farewell.  Though he had passed on, King Bhumibol’s legacy endures in the thousands of royal projects he initiated in his seven decades on the throne.  His memory will no doubt live on in the hearts and minds of millions of Thais.

Free School ‘Appreciation Day’

In October every year, Nalanda Free School volunteer teachers, students and parents get together to celebrate the achievements of our students by presenting them tokens of encouragement and support.  It is also a time for students to show gratitude to their teachers and school volunteers.

Youthful ‘Night of Togetherness’

On 30 September, Nalanda Youth Centre organised a special gathering to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.  Everyone enjoyed a sumptuous potluck dinner, before delving into a Dhamma sharing on “Right Friendship” by Sis. Sunanda Ong.

Mid-Autumn gatherings at café

The Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated on 4 October this year.  At Nalanda Book Café, many families held reunion dinners, enjoying healthy vegetarian meals in a peaceful environment.  The café’s seasonal decoration with Chinese lanterns created a homely touch to their heart-warming gatherings.

‘Sangha Day’ observance in 2017

‘Sangha Day’ is an annual celebration at Nalanda honouring the virtues and contributions of the monastic community.  Buddhist devotees express gratitude to monks and nuns who strive diligently in practising the Dhamma, and teaching it for the benefit of mankind, by providing them with four necessary requisites – food, robes, shelter, and medicine.

Tagging 4,000 books in a day

On Wednesday 18 October, Pustaka Nalanda (the Library) embarked on its annual stock-taking exercise by five librarians with the help of volunteers.  This exercise is part of a good library management system whereby all books are physically located, examined and repaired where necessary, accounted for, and placed back at the proper shelves.

Launching of new Mettārama Centre

Nalanda representatives will be traveling to Kota Bharu this Friday, 20 October to celebrate the opening ceremony of the new Mettārama Meditation Centre.  Ten members – five from Serdang and the rest from Kedah – will join devotees in Kelantan to celebrate this auspicious occasion.

Have a joyous ‘Diwali’

‘Diwali’ (or ‘Deepavali’ in Malaysia) is a Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of goodness over evil; and the victory of knowledge over ignorance.  Just as light dispels darkness, even so, wisdom dispels folly and foolishness.  Nalanda Buddhist Society wishes all our Hindu friends throughout the world a joyous ‘Diwali’.  With wisdom, let us all take the steps to greater illumination in life!
