Religion in ASEAN

8 August 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN – the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.  Malaysia, along with Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore were its founding members back in 1967.  Brunei joined ASEAN after its independence in 1984, followed by Vietnam (in 1995), Laos (1997), Myanmar (1997), and Cambodia (1999).

The necessity of ‘seclusion’

On Sunday 25 June, Bro. Tan delivered a Dhamma talk on ‘seclusion’, the third essential factor of Dhamma practice, following talks on ‘purity’ and ‘simplicity’.  ‘Viveka’ refers to seclusion, remoteness, privacy, and separation from crowds.  When socialising, more often than not, we tend to discuss topics that give rise to aversion and desire.  On the other hand, occasional seclusion and simple living give rise to serenity.

Members’ Day in June

On Saturday 17 June, Nalanda members came together for the monthly members’ meeting to deliberate and discuss matters involving the Society.  During the gathering, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan advised that in whatever we do, we should have willpower, unity and harmony – these factors contribute to the success of the Buddha-Sāsana.

Invitation to Family Fun Fair

The Family Fun Fair is one of the most anticipated event in Nalanda’s annual calendar where we welcome thousands of devotees coming to support this charity. This year, we aim to raise funds for a new Dhamma learning facility – the K. Sri Dhammananda Centre in Sri Serdang. Once completed, the facility will provide opportunities for more children and teenagers to attend Dhamma classes.

Dhamma talk on Energetic Effort

On 4 June, Datuk Charlie Chia was invited to give a Dhamma talk for the Gimhana Sunday Service.  Datuk Charlie spoke about ‘viriya’ or energetic effort, which is an important spiritual quality.  Datuk Charlie said that the inspiration we receive from our Dhamma teachers builds up and sustains our energy to practice for a period of time.  However, this energy deteriorates after a while.

Buddha Day at Nalanda S. P. Branch

For two days on 9 and 10 May, devotees observed a joyful ‘Buddha Day’ at NEO Centre Sungai Petani with wholesome educational activities. Many people from the neighbourhood dropped in at the Centre on this auspicious occasion to offer flowers, listen to Dhamma talks, and meditate on impermanence.
