Seminar on ‘Positive Parenting’

On Saturday 31 October, Nalanda Dhamma School held its first forum for parents at Nalanda Centre to address the challenges being faced by mums and dads today.  Guest speaker Bro. Aggaphala Yap talked about the importance of ‘Positive Parenting’ and how it could be practised.

Dhamma School examination for teenagers

On Sunday 1 November, 50 students aged between 13 and 17 years old sat for the annual Nalanda Dhamma School examination.  They were tested on their basic knowledge of Buddhist scriptures, including ‘Dhammapada’ verses in Pāli Language, and devotional chanting, following 10 intensive study sessions which started in September.

Youths organise Dāna for venerables

On Saturday 17 October, Nalandian youths organised a lunch dāna for two venerable monks from Sentul Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple who had been invited to go on Nalanda’s monthly educational ‘Pindacāra’ (alms-round) in Seri Kembangan.  Although this was the first time the youths were taking on the responsibility, they were eager to put into practice what they had learned in the Youth Centre.

Visit by Appamādaviharī Committee Members

On Saturday 31 October, Venerable Ayya Susīlā and Appamādaviharī Meditation Centre Committee Members from Penang visited Nalanda Centre on a familiarisation tour. They were warmly greeted by Nalandians who made them welcome and gladly took them around the centre.  Ayya Susīlā and the visitors then met with senior Nalanda officers for a genial discussion on the Society’s operations and educational activities.

A verb named “Me”

“The Verb is Me” was the interesting Dhamma talk given by Achariya Tan Siang Chye on Service Sunday, 25 October.  He explained that humans exist because they are constantly changing, vibrating and moving.  In reality, humans are ‘verbs and not nouns’.

SPM candidates get morale boost

It’s that time of year again, when thousands of students will be sitting for the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) examination.  To give moral support to Nalanda Dhamma School (NDS) students who are taking the examinations, NDS organised a get together on Saturday, 24 October to motivate and boost the confidence of the students, as well as foster the spirit of kalyana mitta among the officers, students and Nalanda Youth Centre members.

Meditation retreat for UPM students

On Sunday 25 October, a group of 30 undergraduates from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) held a meditation camp at Nalanda Centre. The one-day retreat, from 10am to 10pm, was led by Venerable Bhikshuni Ji-Chi (继持) and Venerable Bhikshuni Chi-Xiang (持向).

Free School honours teachers and volunteers

On 24 October, Nalanda Free School students, parents and volunteer teachers packed the Teaching Hall on Level 4 of Nalanda Centre to attend the school’s Appreciation & Honours Day. This is a special occasion to thank the volunteer teachers and staff for their dedication and hard work throughout the school year to help the students achieve academic success.

Discover the rich history of Kedah

The Kedah State authority in charge of tourism has chosen to feature the famous Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum and Mount Jerai on its posters for next year’s ‘Discover Kedah 2016’ programme. Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan remarked that the posters featuring historical sites in Kedah were well-chosen as the state was rich in culture and heritage.

Food parcels for the hungry

On Saturday 10 October, a team of 20 Nalandian youths, led by Bro. Disheng, participated in a meal-packaging event at Berjaya Times Square.  It was hosted and organised by Berjaya Youth, in collaboration with ‘Stop Hunger Now’, a non-profit organisation based in the US which aims to end world hunger by operating international food-relief.
