‘Family Fun Fair’ Pre-sales have started

The much-anticipated ‘Nalanda Family Fun Fair’ on 9 August is just 2 weeks away!  There will be more than 120 stalls offering a wide variety of food, beverages, household items, clothes, handicraft and merchandise for sale.  The ‘Fun Fair’ aims to raise funds to finance many community-based educational programmes run by Nalanda Institute, Dhamma School, Free School, the Library, and Youth Centre.  It is the only fund-raising event for Nalanda Sri Serdang this year.

Meditation and Dhamma Sharing

On Wednesday 15 July, devotees came together to practise meditation in the conducive environment of Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  After meditation, Sis. Sandy shared the “Simile of the Snake”, quoting from MN.22 “Alagaddūpama Sutta” in Majjhima Nikāya.

Service Sunday with Sis. Santi

On Sunday 12 July, devotees were delighted to have Nalanda Founder, Bro. Tan’s presence during the morning Service. He gave a short teaching on the significance of taking refuge in the ‘Three Jewels’. Bro. Tan also advised us on how we can protect ourselves by being mindful and having disciplined thoughts.

NEO Centre construction progressing well

On 2 July, Nalanda Founder Bro.Tan made a visit to NEO Centre Sungai Petani (SP) in Kedah to witness its progress.  He was accompanied by Nalanda SP Branch Chairman Bro. Khaw, Deputy Chairman Bro.Teoh, and Building Committee Members.  Project Coordinator Ar. Bro. Fong briefed the team on the progress of construction work, which began in April and is currently 42% completed.

Group Meditation and Dhamma Sharing

On Wednesday 8 July, devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre for meditation practice and learning together with like-minded friends.  After the sitting session, Sis. Buddhini gave a Dhamma sharing on “The Two Kinds of Thoughts” quoting ‘Majjhima Nikāya’ (MN.19) – “Dvedhavitakka Sutta”.  She concluded the sharing by emphasising an instruction from the Buddha to monks – “meditate, bhikkhus, do not delay or else you will regret it later”.  Let’s continue to learn the Dhamma and practice with understanding towards liberation from suffering.

Investigate and not just believe

On Sunday 5 July, Bro. Ananda Fong gave an informative talk quoting Anguttara Nikāya (AN. 3.65) – “Kālāma Sutta” and Majjhima Nikāya (MN.56) – “Upali Sutta”.  From the “Kālāma Sutta” we learnt not to simply believe and to abandon qualities that lead to harm and suffering.  We are encouraged to meditate and practice the four Brahmavihāra.

Service Sunday for Youths

On Sunday 5 July, Nalandian youths ‘spiced’ their weekly Youth Service Sunday with an ‘Ultimate Frisbee’ session.  After the challenging and intensive sport, the youths contributed their services by patching up uneven spots in the field for the convenience of other users. Read more

Saturday, 4 July marked the commencement of BPS 303 – Certificate in Buddhist Studies, offered by Nalanda Institute’s Department of Buddhist & Pāli Studies.  The first session was well-attended by participants from Sri Serdang, as well as from Kelantan via live telecast.

First Anniversary of MH17 Tragedy

Today marks the first anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukrainian airspace, while on a routine flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on 17 July 2014.  All 298 people on board perished in the tragedy.  The great loss of lives from this horrific incident is still felt by many people.
