Minister invited to volunteer at Soup Kitchen

Bro. Tan has invited the Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to volunteer at a ‘soup kitchen’ in order to witness their operations first hand. “The Honorable Minister can ‘turun padang’ (go down to the field) to see whether soup kitchens cause littering or dirty the surroundings.  It is also the best way to get to know the homeless and destitute in Kuala Lumpur, and to understand why they became so,” said Bro Tan.

Enriching Course on ‘Dhammacakka Sutta’

In conjunction with the upcoming ‘Dhamma Day’, Nalanda Institute Malaysia offered a commentarial course on the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ on Saturday 28 June at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  The course which was conducted by the Institute’s Director-Emeritus, Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama, saw a good turnout of 105 participants.

Banning ‘soup kitchens’ not the solution

On Thursday 3 July, ‘The Star’ published an article quoting Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor as saying that with immediate effect, ‘soup kitchens’ will no longer be allowed to operate within a 2km radius of Lot 10 (shopping mall), which covers a large area of Kuala Lumpur city centre.

+Positive+ Gimhāna Meditation Session

On Wednesday 25 June, devotees thronged Nalanda Centre to participate in the fifth meditation session of the on-going ‘Gimhāna Retreat’.  Those who are new to meditation were guided by Bro. Tan in a separate class, while seasoned meditators sat in the Shrine Hall.  After the group sitting, Bro. Tan gave an uplifting Dhamma teaching on “Being Positive” – one of the factors for achieving mental well-being.

Higher Certificate course begins on Saturday

The much-anticipated BPS402 Higher Certificate in Buddhist Studies programme will begin this Saturday, 5 July 2014.  This 5-month course is offered by Nalanda Institute’s Department of Buddhist & Pāli Studies (BPS).  It is suitable for those who have obtained basic qualifications in Buddhist Studies and who wish to deepen their learning and understanding.

Pindacāra in Sri Petaling and Happy Garden

In the early morning of Saturday 7 June, Nalandians and devotes gathered at the Sri Petaling and Happy Garden markets to take part in the monthly ‘Pindacāra’ (monks going on alms-round).  We were grateful to welcome two monks from the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple, Sentul to go on ‘Pindacāra’.

Nalanda Centre Expansion – 50th Day Mark

Today marks the 50th day that work on the Nalanda Centre Expansion Project began.  The project is an extensive one, covering many details and technical challenges.  To date, 15% of the work has been completed, with safe and steady progress.

Mandarin Buddhist Course continues in J.B.

Last weekend (28–29 June), devotees in Johor Bahru continued their monthly lessons in the Mandarin Buddhist Course organised by Nalanda Institute Malaysia.  On Saturday 28 June, Sis. Nandini Tan conducted lectures on “What Buddhism Is”, “Three Jewels”, and “Five Precepts” for 35 course participants in the conducive environment of NEO Centre Johor Bahru.
