Make a stand for Mother Earth

Today is Earth Day.  This bountiful planet which we all call home has been the source of all we need for our survival and livelihood.  In just the last two centuries however, humankind has callously over-harvested its natural resources and caused immense damage to its ecosystems in pursuit of material comforts and conveniences.  “The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not for everyone’s greed,” said Mahatma Gandhi.

‘Selamat Berpuasa’ to our Muslim friends

Today is the beginning of the Ramadhan month, when Muslims around the world would fulfil their religious obligation by embarking on a month of fasting from dawn to dusk.  This is a spiritual period for reflection, cultivating wholesome habits, and developing kindness and compassion.  We wish our Muslim brothers and sisters “Selamat Berpuasa”, and a blessed Ramadhan Al-Mubarak.  Salam mettā.

Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip passes away

His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh has passed away peacefully today at 99. As the longest-serving consort in British history, the nation mourns as the Prince had earned the affection of generations with his dedication to public service, charitable work, and steadfast support for his wife Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II and her role as reigning monarch.

Health is the greatest gain

Since 1950, ‘World Health Day’ is celebrated annually on 7 April to raise awareness on the importance of global health.  Battling Covid-19 in the past year has highlighted this importance – the interdependence of our own physical health and the well-being of others, and how devastating it can be should we be careless or indifferent.  Thus, we can also see that while the virus affects everyone regardless of race or religion, the communities that place higher emphasis on caring for one another have been able to weather the pandemic most effectively.

Welcome back to Nalanda Centre

We are pleased to announce that Nalanda Centre re-opens today Thursday, 1 April with strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the safety and welfare of all visitors and staff members.  Our operating hours are 10am to 5pm from Mondays to Saturdays, and 8am to 12pm on Sundays. Kindly comply to all SOPs when visiting the Centre.

Gratitude on Nalanda Patron’s Day

18 March is observed as “Nalanda Patron’s Day” – an annual programme to commemorate and appreciate all our donors, benefactors and volunteers who have contributed tremendously to the growth of Nalanda, and by extension, to the development of Buddhist education.  Commemorated since 2007, the date marks the birth anniversary of Nalanda Buddhist Society’s late Spiritual Advisor – Venerable Kirinde Sri Dhammananda Nāyaka Thero who would be 103 if he were alive.

Nalanda Sungai Petani holds 8th A.G.M.

On Saturday 13 March, Nalanda Sungai Petani (SP) Branch held their 8th Annual General Meeting at the NEO Centre in SP, with Branch Chairman Bro. Song Wai Leng presiding.  The meeting was well attended by Branch members who followed the Covid-19 SOPs strictly but gladly as they gathered on this important occasion.

Nalanda Patron’s Day

“Nalanda Patron’s Day” is an annual programme to commemorate and appreciate all donors, benefactors and volunteers who have contributed to the growth of Nalanda over the years, and by extension, to the development of Buddhist education.  Nalanda Buddhist Society first observed “Patron’s Day” on 18 March 2007, in conjunction with the birth anniversary of our late teacher and spiritual adviser – Venerable Dr. Kirinde Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero.
