On Saturday 15 March, Nalanda members, devotees and students of the Family Dhamma School joyfully welcomed Ven. Ayya Sumangala at the Nalanda Education & Outreach Centre in Johor Jaya. Ayya gave a Dhamma talk to parents of the Dhamma School about the true happiness of a Buddhist practitioner.
We often mistake the pursuit of pleasure to bring us happiness. These pleasures are never lasting, and even brings upon us suffering. The untrained mind is very hard to control because of it’s hardened habits, but it is not impossible. The mind which learns, understands the truths in life and is disciplined can achieve true happiness.
“Dhamma Practice is a gradual training, like a baby learning to flip, to sit, to stand and to walk.”
Sis. See Hui Shien, Director of Nalanda Dhamma School led the facilitators in seeking advice from Ayya Sumangala
Mindfulness is key. Simply being aware and fully understanding the breathing process – just noting your breath and being aware of the present, this is the training of mindfulness. Right effort is also necessary to focus the mind and reduce distractions. Through clear mindfulness and reflection, our concentration will grow stronger and stronger.
Ayya also met with the Dhamma School’s facilitators who sought her advise on guiding the families’ learning and progress. She advised that today’s teenagers are conditioned differently when we listen to them. They don’t want to be told what to do but they will listen to friends, and also appreciate attention and guidance from their parents and teachers.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Ayya Sumangala for coming to guide us on her visit to Johor Bahru. Our devotees and facilitators are inspired by her advice, and also her ardent efforts in Dhamma propagation to learners of all ages. May Ayya be in good health and be successful in her noble efforts. Sadhu.
