Welcome home to all Nalandians

This morning, Nalanda members are travelling from Johor Bahru, Sungai Petani and all corners of the Klang Valley to congregate at Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang for the 7th National Members’ Convention which starts today.   The event which will run for 5 days, will culminate with the celebration of Nalanda’s 16th Anniversary on 1st May, Nalanda Day.  We wish all members safe travels and look forward to welcome you back to our spiritual home.

Joyful preparations for Buddha Day

‘Buddha Day’ is less than a month away and all Nalandians are getting ready to celebrate the most significant event of the year for Buddhists.  For the past few weeks, many members and volunteers have started planning and preparing for the commemoration which will be held on 18 and 19 May.

Compassion in Action

On 21 April, Datuk Charlie Chia delivered a Dhamma talk on ‘Compassion in Action’ at Nalanda Centre.  He described that one who has compassion, cannot bear to see the suffering of others and will do what they can to help.  Those with compassion experience freedom from feelings such as anger, hatred and jealousy because compassion itself is a strength of character and also gives strength to those in need.

7th National Members’ Convention

Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia will be holding its 7th National Members’ Convention in Sri Serdang for 5 days, from 27 April to 1 May.  This important meeting of members from all branches will discuss issues vital to the Society’s development.  There will also be many teaching sessions by Nalanda achariyas.

Dark day for humanity

Earlier today, several blasts in churches and hotels were reported in Sri Lanka, killing at least 290 people and injuring hundreds more.  It was a dastardly act of violence on a peaceful Sunday morning, especially when Christians were going for Easter prayers.

Paruadi Ramasamy gave a talk on how to develop a respectful attitude.  Respect is positively correlated to humility, contentment and gratitude.  When developed with right understanding, these four qualities help us achieve harmony and tranquility within ourselves and the wider community.

Better parenting through effective communication

On 10 March, Nalanda Dhamma School organised a Parenting Workshop for parents and facilitators to explore effective strategies in understanding and connecting with our children.  Dhamma speaker and counsellor, Bro. Ooi Boon Keat started with an exercise to list out our expectations towards our children and vice versa.  Parents realised that our expectations greatly outweigh that of our childrens’ capabilities and reflected that we must be realistic to avoid causing unnecessary stress and conflicts.

Nalanda celebrates ‘Earth Day’

On 13 April 2019, Nalanda Buddhist Society will be celebrating ‘Earth Day’ by planting more trees at Wisdom Park.  Nicknamed the “Green Warriors of Wisdom Park”, groups of volunteers have been planting local forest trees there almost every weekend since 12 months ago.  As of 31 March 2019, 402 trees and hundreds of shrubs have been planted, making the campus grounds truly pleasant as well as rehabilitating its environmental vitality.

Joyful experience of alms-giving

On 2 March, Nalandians spent their Saturday morning meaningfully at Taman O.U.G. and Happy Garden markets in the Pindacāra programme.  The programme has been held every first Saturday of the month since 2012 to create awareness on giving alms and the right way to support Sangha members.

Nottingham Youth Camp at Nalanda

From 22 to 24 March, 30 undergraduates from Nottingham University Buddhist Society (NBS) immersed themselves in a learning camp at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  The theme of the camp was ‘Yellow Brick Road’, symbolizing one’s journey to true happiness.
