How to grow ourselves spiritually

On Sunday 2 April, Sis. Santī Cheang presented a talk on ‘how to grow ourselves’ in spirituality and wisdom.  She said that most people nowadays seek ‘happiness’ from external stimulus. However, such fleeting and worldly happiness does not make us spiritually grounded, and gives us no lasting satisfaction.

Daily Dhamma reminders during Gimhāna

For the past few days since the beginning of Gimhāna Retreat, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan has been giving short Dhamma teachings daily after the evening chanting.  Tonight, students of Nalanda Dhamma School together with some parents gathered to listen to the teachings.

Sri Lanka inundated by monsoon flood

CNN reported on 29 May that at least 151 people have been killed and 111 are missing (please read the latest updates at the bottom of this article) due to floodings from monsoon rains across southwestern portions of Sri Lanka, according to the country’s Ministry of Disaster Management.  The severe weather has also displaced nearly half a million people, and triggered landslides throughout the country.

Lecture on Pāli language and literature

On Friday 14 April, Bro. Tan was invited to present a special lecture on Pāli language by Persatuan Buddhist Universiti Malaya’s (PBUM) Miao Xi Dhamma Speaker Training Workshop.  The talk held at the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) Headquarters was well-attended by young Dhamma-speaker trainees and Nalandians.

Visit by friends from Beji, Indonesia

Over the weekend of 8 and 9 April, Nalanda Centre hosted a visit by our friends from Pa-Auk Tawya Vipassanā Dhura Hermitage (PATVDH) in Beji, Java.  The group of ten was led by Bro. Phang Hok Lij on their first-ever visit to Serdang.  Upon arrival, the visitors were warmly received by Nalandians, and brought on a tour of the Centre.

Nalanda’s Annual ‘Gimhāna’ Period

For seven weeks after the Buddha’s Enlightenment on Wesak full-moon in May, He contemplated on the Dhamma with His perfectly clear faculty of comprehension.  Then, He travelled for seven days from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, where He preached the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta on Asalha Day, the full-moon in July.

PBUM Buddhist history camp

From 7 to 9 April, Persatuan Buddhist Universiti Malaya (PBUM) held a camp at Nalanda Centre on the history of Buddhism.  30 students gathered for three wholesome days to learn from Venerable Ji Chi the development of Buddhism throughout the past 2,500 years – from its emergence in ancient India to how it evolved into three main traditions of Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, today.

Remembering and honouring our roots

On Sunday 26 March, the Director of Pustaka Nalanda Bro. Ananda Fong was invited to present a talk titled ‘Remembering Our Roots’ in conjunction with the traditional Chinese Qing Ming observance.  In Buddhist scriptures, father and mother are often described as ‘Brahma’, comparable to divine heavenly beings who are worthy of reverence.

Wesak volunteers Appreciation Day

At a simple ceremony this morning, Nalanda acknowledged and appreciated all volunteers who contributed to the recent successful and meaningful ‘Buddha Day’ celebrations. Our heartfelt thanks to the combined effort of 20 teams who rendered their selfless and joyful service to host thousands of devotees in Sri Serdang and our branch centres. Sadhu anumodana!

Nottingham Buddhist Society Camp

The Nottingham University Buddhist Society held their 7th Annual Camp at Nalanda Centre from 24 to 26 March.  The objective of the camp was to let participants understand the dangers of attachments, and to develop Right View.
