Twenty-six Nalanda officers are spending the long Deepavali weekend attending a special retreat in Klang, Selangor.  This is the second annual leadership retreat which involves Executive Committee members and all branch leaders.

Happy Diwali

Diwali’, or ‘Deepavali’ in Malaysia, is often called the “festival of lights”.  The light that abolishes darkness is emblematic of the triumph of goodness over evil; truth over falsehood; and wisdom over ignorance.  Nalanda Buddhist Society wishes our Hindu friends across the world a joyous celebration of ‘Diwali’.  May you enjoy delightful reunions with family, and cheerful meetings with friends.  Namaste!

Joyful felicitation dāna in Sentul

The Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul was a hive of wholesome activity this morning with more than 150 devotees offering Sanghika Dāna in honour of its abbot, Venerable Bootawatte Sri Saranankara Nāyaka Thero, who turned 63 today.  Despite it being a working day, many people have taken time off to participate in Dāna, which is testimony to the great esteem the community has for Ven. Saranankara.

Visit by Firefly Mission Singapore

On Saturday 22 October, 90 members of Firefly Mission Singapore visited Nalanda Centre as part of their ‘Kathina’-season tour of Malaysia, led by their President Dr. Ng Yee Kong.  This was the Mission’s fifth consecutive year visiting Nalanda, and one of the events Nalandians look forward to annually.

Condolences to families of fire victims

Nalandians offer our deepest condolences to the families of patients at Johor Bahru’s Sultanah Aminah Hospital who perished in a fire yesterday, 25 October.  The blaze occurred at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where all six casualties were warded.  As a result of the fire, other patients and staff at the hospital were temporarily evacuated from the building.

Resolutions passed at Nalanda E.G.M.

Nalanda Buddhist Society members based in Sri Serdang had a successful Extraordinary General Meeting (E.G.M.) which was held on Sunday, 16 October.  The E.G.M. was called by the Board of Management to discuss important issues regarding the Society’s future development.

UPM Buddhist Society marks 50th anniversary

On Saturday 1 October, the UPM Buddhist Society (PBUPM) celebrated its 50th anniversary with an appreciation dinner in Shah Alam attended by its members, past and present.  The society was established in 1966 by staff members of then College of Agriculture Malaya, which was upgraded in 1973 to University of Agriculture Malaysia (in Malay, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia or UPM). In 1998, its name changed again to Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Nalanda pays tribute to King Bhumibol

It has been a week since the passing of the beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the people of Thailand are slowly coming to terms with this great loss and collective grief. The void in their hearts created by the king’s demise cannot be quickly or easily filled. Time alone can heal.

Nalanda hosts Ayya Santinī today

Nalanda Centre is honoured to host Venerable Bhikkhunī Santinī Therī today for a short visit.  Ayya Santinī is a well-regarded meditation teacher and renowned Dhamma speaker from Indonesia.  She is the Abbess of Wisma Kusalayani, a bhikkhuni-training centre near Lembang in West Java.

‘Sangha Day’ to be celebrated in November

Nalanda Buddhist Society will be celebrating our annual ‘Sangha Day’ next month at two venues – Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang and NEO Centre Happy Garden in Kuala Lumpur.  ‘Sangha Day’ is dedicated to honour, appreciate and support the monastic order of bhikkhus (monks) and bhikkhunis (nuns)the pillars of Buddha-Sāsana.  On this day, devotees offer them robes as well as requisites such as medicinal products and food supplements.
