Asalha Full-moon – ‘Dhamma Day’

Monday 18 July was the Asalha Full-Moon Uposatha Day, whereupon this day 2600 years ago, the Buddha delivered the First Sermon on the ‘Four Noble Truths’ and the ‘Noble Eightfold Path’ to the world.  The occasion is also known as ‘Dhamma Day’, and is one of the seven* observance days at Nalanda.

‘Dhammacakka Day’ Observance

On Sunday 17 July, Nalandians observed ‘Dhammacakka Day’ to commemorate the turning of the ‘Wheel of Dhamma’ 2600 years ago, when the Buddha expounded the ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ to his first five disciples at Isipatana near Benares.

Kelantanese youths visit Nalanda

During the July school holidays, a group of Kelantanese youths who had participated in the Dhamma-Living Camp for Young Adults extended their stay in Selangor so that they could visit Nalanda Centre.  Having found much inspiration and joy after the camp, the group wished to visit Sri Serdang to continue their learning.

Bhāvanā Day with Ayya Susīla

On 13 August, Venerable Ayya Susīla, an experienced meditation teacher who is a learned disciple of Pa Auk Sayadaw, returned to lead ‘Bhāvanā Day’ – a quarterly one-day meditation retreat at Nalanda Centre.  The fruitful Saturday saw the gathering of 120 participants who were eager to learn Dhamma and cultivate their minds.

He who lived wisely inspires eternally

The late Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda continues to inspire many Buddhists even 10 years after his death.  The memorial service held in his honour yesterday was testimony to that – the large crowd that attended the service occupied 3 floors of Nalanda Centre.

Buddha-Relic procession in Sri Serdang

A special procession of Buddha Relic, the Tipitaka, the robe of the late Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda, and members of the Māha Sangha were held in Sri Serdang yesterday morning to mark the 10th ‘K. Sri Dhammananda Memorial Day’.  The ceremonial procession from Nalanda House to Nalanda Centre was a delightful sight indeed.  The calm spirituality and dignified manner in which it was held inspired everyone present at the event.

Nalanda’s Merdeka Day Message 2016

Today, Malaysians celebrate the 59th anniversary of our nation’s independence.  We are grateful for the relative peace and stability that our nation has enjoyed over the decades.  We are also thankful for the invaluable services rendered by honourable civil servants and principled civic leaders to the development of Malaysia.  We owe those unsung heroes a debt of gratitude in ensuring our country’s progress despite facing severe challenges in nation-building.

Special procession of Buddha Relic

A special procession of Buddha Relic, the Tipitaka and Māha Sangha will be held at 8.45 am tomorrow (Wednesday, 31 August) to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda – Nalanda’s late Spiritual Adviser and the Sanghanāyaka Thera of Malaysia.

The enduring legacy of the late Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda

Tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda’s passing (on 31 August 2006). Although he had physically left us a decade ago, Ven. Dhammananda had nonetheless left behind an enduring legacy of Buddhist educational and missionary spirit among his followers in Malaysia.

Buddha Relic welcomed at Nalanda Centre

Yesterday, Nalanda Centre had the great honour to be bequeathed with a Buddha Relic (Pāli, “Śarīra”) – a single bone fragment of the Blessed One.  The Relic was previously under the custodianship of the late Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda Nāyaka Thero and Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama for many decades.
