Nalanda Education Team Meeting

The Nalanda Education Team ( N.E.T.) members had a meaningful “Malaysia Day” by holding their second meeting yesterday morning at Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang.  The meeting was chaired by N.E.T. Chairman Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama, and attended by all Directors and Heads of Department from Nalanda Institute, Dharma School, Free School, Pustaka Nalanda, and Youth Centre.

Happy ‘Malaysia Day’ 2014

Today, we mark the 51st anniversary of the formation of “Malaysia”.  Our nation was born when the Federation of Malaya merged with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore in 1963.  (Singapore, however left the federation in 1965 to forge its own destiny.)

Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch Leaders’ Visit

Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch Management Committee members Bro. Goo Chu Lai and Bro. Fong Chee Meng made a short visit to Nalanda Centre on Friday, 12 September.  Joining them were Sis. Ong Yen See, who is the member in charge of ticketing sales for the branch’s upcoming charity concert, and Bro. Chiam, a youth leader at Kedah Buddhist Association.

Community gardening day

Sunday, 14 September is Nalanda’s annual ‘Community Gardening Day’!  Every year close to ‘Malaysia Day’, Nalandians and the surrounding community will gather in Sri Serdang to clean and green the neighbourhood.  This is one of our efforts to commemorate the country’s founding day, by taking care of cleanliness in our vicinity, and to plant suitable local trees and shrubs to create a better environment for everyone.

Terrorism is unjust and inhumane

‘September 11th’ – otherwise another mundane and beautiful date on the calendar – would forever be remembered with sorrow and disdain for the dastardly acts of terrorists hijacking airplanes, and using them as missiles in their assault on New York’s World Trade Center.  Their immoral act caused the untimely deaths of nearly 3,000 innocent victims, and sent shock waves throughout the world.

Building Progress – 120 days on, 60 left to go!

Today, we reached the 120th day milestone since the Nalanda Centre Building Expansion Project began.  In another 60 days, the construction and renovation work would be wholly completed.  We are happy and thankful that the project is on schedule and progressing well, and furthermore with a perfect safety record!  The building construction is now concentrated at Level 4.  With the floor slab completed, the workers are busy working on the roof structure presently.

Supporting the “Four-fold Assembly”

Recently, Nalanda had the good fortune of hosting Ven. Ayya Santinī from Maribaya, Indonesia, who was accompanied on her visit here by several Indonesian devotees.  While residing at Nalanda Centre, she gave several teachings and conducted personal interviews with devotees.  We were also honoured to receive Venerables Dhammadinnā and Sumangalā who came to meet Ayya Santinī in Sri Serdang.

Mandarin Team marks 6 months on the job

Nalanda’s Chinese-Language Communications Team marked their six months on the job this week.  Back in March, the team launched a Mandarin Facebook page to reach out to more people.  The posts published there comprise original designs, new articles by teachers, and interviews with volunteers.  So far the page has received very encouraging support due to the quality of its contents.

Today marks six months since the mysterious disappearance of MH370 over the Indian Ocean on 8 March.  We have not forgotten the shock and anguish inflicted by this tragic, unsettling incident to so many people, and indeed to the entire nation.

Wishing you a blessed Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a major annual celebration in East Asia.  For the Chinese people, it is traditionally a day for family reunion and the celebration of harmony and togetherness.  Over the centuries, the festival evolved to include the display of colourful lanterns that mimic the autumn foliage, and the consumption of ‘mooncakes’ (尝月饼).
