He bestowed upon us the name ‘Nalanda’

Two decades ago, our late Spiritual Adviser, Ven. K. Sri Dhammananda Nāyaka Thero (1918 – 2006) bestowed upon us the name “Nalanda” meaning ‘the giving of knowledge and wisdom’.  It imbued upon our founding members a sense of purpose and mission to live up to the educational legacy of the ancient Nālandā Māha Vihāra in India.

Take action this ‘Earth Day’

To celebrate ‘Earth Day’ today on 22 April, volunteers gathered at Wisdom Park to plant 12 trees, bringing the total count of trees planted here to over 1800.  As the trees grow and mature, they will gift us fresher air and become a refuge for bees, birds, and many more beings.  In years to come, their canopies will also fill out and ease the temperatures here.

Buddha Day Heritage Procession

The Buddha Day Heritage Procession at Nalanda is a unique cultural experience for the whole community to gather for a spiritual experience.  It is the only Heritage Procession in Malaysia where the Buddharupam is conveyed on a wooden sedan to the harmonious beat of drums and gongs, accompanied by beautifully hand-crafted paraphernalia carried by traditionally-dressed devotees.

Holy Vesakhā Month starts today

Today is the New-moon day of the holy Vesakhā Month. On these Uposatha (observance) days, the laity devote themselves to a day of restraint, meditation and cultivation of mindfulness. Some may observe the Eight Precepts and listen to or read Dhamma teachings attentively.

Buddha Day – Mass Food Offering

A Mass Food Offering for the public will be held on Wesak ‘Buddha Day’, 4 May, from 5.00pm to 6.30pm.  Every year, devotees bring along food to share and serve the public out of generosity and humility.  We rejoice in knowing that many who received food years ago are now offering food to the public in return!  Sharing blessings and working together in harmony, this mass food offering is also a wonderful opportunity to cultivate ourselves spiritually.
