What Buddhist Year is this?

Vesakhā full-moon is the auspicious ‘Buddha Day’ which commemorates three important events in the Life of our Great Teacher – His birth in the year 623 BCE; His Enlightenment in 588 BCE; and His Parinibbāna in 543 BCE.  ‘Buddha Day’ on 7 May 2020 also marks the beginning of a new Buddhist Year, or more commonly expressed as Buddhist Era (B.E.) 2564. But how exactly do you derive the Year 2564?

Display this symbol of Buddhist unity

In the past, devotees would hang colourful Buddhist flags around temples as Wesak ‘Buddha Day’ was approaching.  This year, under the shadows of a pandemic and the national lock-down, celebrations will undoubtedly be very subdued.  Buddhist centres are not putting up the flags because religious gatherings are still not allowed this month in Malaysia.

‘Buddha Day’ theme for B.E. 2564

In just a few days, Buddhists worldwide will be celebrating the sacred ‘Buddha Day’.  This joyous occasion which falls on the full-moon day of Vesakhā month commemorates the anniversary of Buddha’s Enlightenment twenty-six centuries ago.  It also marks the beginning of a new Buddhist Year – the Buddhist Era (B.E.) 2564. Celebrating Nalanda Buddhist Society’s 17th Anniversary

Today is ‘Nalanda Day’, the day the Society was founded.  It is a time for us to celebrate by paying tribute to our Dhamma teachers, benefactors, members and volunteers who enable Nalanda to carry out its unchanging Mission of providing holistic education.  The progress that we see today is a concrete reflection of the spirit of the community that comes together and stays together through the years.

‘Buddha Day’ theme to be announced

Every year, a few days before Wesak Full-moon ‘Buddha Day’, a theme will be announced for that particular year’s celebration.  The purpose of having a theme is to focus devotees’ attention to an important aspect of Dhamma learning and practice that will help us grow spiritually.  The theme will subsequently be explained and elaborated upon in Dhamma talks over the entire year.

Planting trees can help prevent premature deaths

New researches by scientists in the United States have shown the benefits of increasing tree cover in cities to people’s physical and mental health.  In Philadelphia, America’s fifth-largest city, researchers touted that hundreds of premature deaths can be prevented every year if the city’s tree cover were increased by just 10%.
