Insightful Study Tour to Northern Malaysia

42 members of Buddhist Fellowship and Firefly Mission Singapore had an insightful 4-day tour to the northern states of Penang, Kedah and Perlis from 17 to 20 April 2014. The highlight of the study tour was a day-long visit to Bujang Valley guided by Bro Tan.

Nalanda Johor Bahru hosted Ven. Kumāra

Nalanda Johor Bahru Branch recently hosted Ven. Kumāra Bhikkhu from Sāsanārakkha Buddhist Sanctuary Taiping, from 7 to 10 April.  On Tuesday 8 April, Ven. Kumāra gave a Mandarin Dhamma talk at NEO Centre JB, with the title ‘如何面对负性思维和感受’ (“How to overcome negative thoughts and emotions” ).  The talk was most relevant as nowadays people are stretched and stressed beyond limit by many commitments and engagements.  The Shrine Hall was packed with devotees eager to enhance their well-being.

“Lead-A-Ship” Teenage Camp

On 22-25 March, Nalanda Dharma School organized a 4-day Leadership Camp at Samadhi Vihāra, Shah Alam.  The camp themed ‘Lead-A-Ship’ aimed to cultivate and enhance leadership skills among teenagers.  A total of 55 participants aged 14 – 17 years old who came from various states participated in this meaningful camp.

What burning ‘paper money’ really meant

During a funeral ceremony in ancient China, paper-made models of houses, sedan chairs, treasure chests, clothes, daily utensils, and even effigies of servants, were burnt as the cortege was leaving home for burial in the cemetery.

Wonderful Learning Trip to National Science Centre

On Saturday 22 March, Nalanda Free School organized a learning trip for secondary school students to the National Science Centre in Kuala Lumpur.  The aim of the trip is to bring education beyond the boundaries of the classroom and to expose the students to science.

‘Pattidāna’ – Dedication of Merits

‘Dedication of Merits’ is a Buddhist practice whereby one performs a noble, meritorious deed in kind memory of one’s departed relatives.  One performs such wholesome deeds in honour of loved ones who had passed away by thinking: “Idam me ñātinam hotu, sukhitā hontu ñātayo.” – “Let this merit accrue to my departed relatives; may they be happy!”

Touching Memorial Service for Victims of MH370

Nalandians and devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre last night (27 March) for special prayers and a moving Memorial Service for casualties of MH370.  Founder Bro. Tan led the congregation in 20 minutes of Metta Meditation, followed by Pūja (offerings) and Pāli chanting.

A Joyful Skill Learning Workshop

On Sunday 9 March, Nalanda Free School organised an interactive Skill Learning Workshop to introduce skills and techniques to enhance Secondary School students’ ability to self-learn, using Mathematic as a learning tool. We were honoured to have Mr. Teoh Hee Chong, a Psychology lecturer from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and New Era College to conduct this workshop.
