The Young Buddhist Quiz 2013

On Saturday, 31 August, nine teams of teenagers aged 13 to 16 from five Dhamma schools came together to participate in a friendly competition – the “Young Buddhist Quiz” at Nalanda Centre. The 36 students were representing Bandar Utama Buddhist Society Sunday Dhamma School, BMSM Samadhi Vihara, Kinrara Metta Buddhist Society Sunday Dhamma School, Nalanda Dharma School, and Shah Alam Buddhist Society Sunday Dhamma School.

Metta Sutta Commentarial Course in Kuching

Nalanda Institute's BPS136 Metta Sutta Commentarial Course was conducted for the first time at Kuching Dhamma Vijaya Buddhist Centre on 17 August.  Sarawak is the 7th Malaysian state to host the Institute's course after Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Sabah.  Outside Malaysia, the Institute's course had also been conducted recently in Singapore.

True Significance of Wesak

On 11 & 12 May, an introductory course to explain the true significance of Wesak was held at Nalanda Centre in Sri Serdang and NEO @ Happy Garden respectively. Wesak Day commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha. These events took place on the full-moon day in the lunar month of Vesākha. This year, in Malaysia, Wesak Day is observed on 24 May.

Obituary – Prof. Emeritus A. K. Warder

It is with deep respects that we announce the passing of a distinguished scholar in Indology, Prof. Emeritus Anthony Kennedy Warder (A. K. Warder) earlier this month in Canada.  Prof. Warder passed away days before Chinese New Year, and his funeral was held in Toronto on Friday, 15 February 2013.

Mandarin Course – The Life of Buddha

The first session of the General Buddhist Studies in Mandarin course was conducted on 13 January.  Organised by Nalanda Institute Malaysia’s Department of Buddhist & Pali Studies, this course has received positive responses and the first session was attended by 50 participants.

Dhamma School Teachers Training Programme

On 5 & 6 January 2013, Nalanda Institute Malaysia (NIM) conducted a two-day teacher's training programme at Uttama Bodhi Vihara in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. The 35 existing and aspiring Dhamma School teachers who participated in the weekend programme gained much knowledge and inspiration to further the noble cause of Buddhist education.

The Art of Story-telling Continues

On 13 October, laughter could be heard ringing from the Srivijaya Hall of Nalanda Centre.  It was the second session of the story-telling workshop.  Mr. Vijaya Samarawickrama (fondly known as Uncle Vijaya) enthralled the participants with his sharing on presentation skills.  He also taught how to best use the voice and body language to make stories come alive, and captivate the audience.
