Dialogue on ‘Chinese Buddhism’

On Saturday 19 August, Nalanda Institute Malaysia coorganised a seminar themed ‘Face to Face & Heart to Heart’ featuring Venerable Wei Wu, the abbot of Than Hsiang Temple.  The seminar aimed to clear commonly-held misconceptions about ‘Chinese Buddhism’, and to allow for a discussion on contemporary issues affecting the Malaysian Buddhist community.

Buddhist Course in Mandarin

Nalanda Institute Malaysia is offering an 8-session course – BPS 102 Buddhist Studies in Mandarin – commencing 7 October 2017 at NEO Centre, Kuala Lumpur.  This free course is suitable for new-comers and students of Buddhism.  Enrolment is open to all aged 18 years and above, and proficient in Mandarin language.

Celebrating Nalanda Institute’s 10th anniversary with Dhamma Forum

On Sunday 2 July, a special Dhamma Forum was organised to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Nalanda Institute Malaysia.  The speakers at the forum included Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan, Achariya Tan Siang Chye, Datuk Seri Dr. Victor Wee, Datuk Charlie Chia, Bro. Ananda Fong, and Sis. Paruadi Ramasamy.

2017 Nalanda Award for Social Action & Responsibility

On 1 July 2017, Nalanda Institute Malaysia had the honour of conferring the ‘2017 NALANDA AWARD FOR SOCIAL ACTION & RESPONSIBILITY’ to Dr. Phang Cheng Kar – a consultant psychiatrist and mindfulness-based therapist who created MINDFULGym, the first structured and scientifically-supported mindfulness-based programme for stress reduction and wellness in Malaysia.

2017 Nalanda Award for Leadership Integrity

On 1 July 2017, Nalanda Institute Malaysia had the honour of conferring the ‘2017 NALANDA AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP INTEGRITY’ to Datuk Charlie Chia.  In the 1970’s and 80’s, he played a vital role in the formation and development of several Buddhist organisations in Malaysia, including the Buddhist Missionary Society Youth Section, the Buddhist Society of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kota Tinggi Buddhist Society, Mettā Lodge Johor Bahru, and Kuantan Buddhist Association.

2017 Nalanda Award for Dhammaduta

On 1 July 2017, Nalanda Institute Malaysia had the honour of conferring the ‘2017 NALANDA AWARD FOR DHAMMADUTA’ to Dr. Punna Wong Yin Onn.  Dr. Wong started serving the Buddha-Sāsana actively in the year 2000.  Since 2004, he has been leading weekly Dhamma-sharing sessions at Mettā Lodge Buddhist Society in Johor Bahru.  In 2016, he published a book titled “Walking in the Buddha’s Footprint, 100 Reflective Essays”, a collection of Dhamma lessons and experience he encountered in the past two decades.

WACANA 2017 Keynote Presentation

On 1 July, Āyasmā Aggacitta gave the keynote presentation at WACANA 2017 Buddhist Conference, where he outlined the importance of distinguishing the ‘essential teachings’ of the Buddha from later cultural accretions.  The text of his presentation is available here for our study and reflection.  We would like to thank Venerable Aggacitta for giving us permission to publish the keynote presentation.

Terrific video on WACANA 2017

Just a week ago on 1 July, Nalanda Institute and the Theravāda Buddhist Council of Malaysia jointly organised the successful and truly inspiring WACANA 2017. More than 600 people participated in this largest Buddhist Conference in Malaysia this year, which was themed “The Buddha-Word: Discovering the Essential”.
