Nalanda Youths ‘fuelled up’ for 2016

Nalanda Youth Centre officers went to NEO Centre Johor Bahru to recharge, re-energise, and align their direction and plans for the coming year at their annual ‘Fuel-Up’ Camp from 11 to 13 December.  It was a fruitful gathering and the youth officers are now highly motivated to lead the Youth Centre forward.

F.U.N. session on effective leadership

On Saturday 21 November, youths from various higher educational institutions came for a talk on Buddhist leadership as part of a “Fellowship Undergraduate Network” (F.U.N.) session organised by Nalanda Youth Centre. In his talk, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan explained the aspects of wisdom, integrity and compassion in effective leadership.

Nalanda youths paint their Centre

On Saturday 14 November, several Nalanda youths took it upon themselves to give the Nalanda Youth Centre a facelift.  The centre is a lively and ‘happening’ place.  It is well used by about 340 Free School students for their tuition classes on weekdays and by Nalanda youths for their activities during the weekends.  With so much going on, the premises was beginning to show signs of wear and tear.  So to keep up its maintenance, several youths volunteered to give it a fresh coat of paint and some minor touch-up.

Youths organise Dāna for venerables

On Saturday 17 October, Nalandian youths organised a lunch dāna for two venerable monks from Sentul Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple who had been invited to go on Nalanda’s monthly educational ‘Pindacāra’ (alms-round) in Seri Kembangan.  Although this was the first time the youths were taking on the responsibility, they were eager to put into practice what they had learned in the Youth Centre.

Food parcels for the hungry

On Saturday 10 October, a team of 20 Nalandian youths, led by Bro. Disheng, participated in a meal-packaging event at Berjaya Times Square.  It was hosted and organised by Berjaya Youth, in collaboration with ‘Stop Hunger Now’, a non-profit organisation based in the US which aims to end world hunger by operating international food-relief.

Youths have F.U.N.

On Saturday 17 October, Nalanda Youth Centre held the first session of Fellowship Undergraduate Network (F.U.N.) 2015.  Participants from various higher institutions came together for the orientation programme, themed Hello Friend & Friendship.  The programme kicked off with a lively ice-breaking session, followed by an introduction to Buddhist culture and the offering of lunch dāna.  Sis. Sumanā Lim spoke about the importance of dāna, which are acts of giving that help to reduce greed and promote selflessness.

Nalandians attend youth seminar

On 3 October, three Nalandian youths – Bro. Disheng, Bro. Ajit, and Bro. Lee Kern – attended a community-building seminar organised by the Bahái Community of Malaysia.  The focus of the roundtable discussion was youth leadership and community service.  Participants from various religious organisations gave constructive views on how best to build a better community for future generations.

Lead and Make a Change!

The Fellowship Undergraduate Network (F.U.N.) organised by Nalanda Youth Centre will be back this October!  F.U.N. is meant for Buddhist undergraduates and youths to learn leadership skills and at the same time, to interact with other young Buddhists from various universities and colleges.  Through this programme, participants are given the training to be an effective leader through courses and activities.  It is a lively session that encourages positive interaction, learning and laughter!

Nalanda youths organised “D’ Challenge”

On Saturday 22 August, Nalanda Youth Centre hosted 20 youths for the “D’ Challenge” fun competition.  This programme was aimed at imparting essential values to youths who are facing many challenges today.  The programme began with Pūja (offerings to the ‘Three Jewels’) and welcoming speech by Nalanda Youth Leader, Bro. DiSheng.
