Daily Dhamma reminders during Gimhāna

For the past few days since the beginning of Gimhāna Retreat, Nalanda founder Bro. Tan has been giving short Dhamma teachings daily after the evening chanting.  Tonight, students of Nalanda Dhamma School together with some parents gathered to listen to the teachings.

Bro. Tan explained in very simple language, the word ‘Araham’ – which has various meanings – one of which is the “destruction of enemies”.  Many people think that ‘enemies’ are other people who are hostile to them, or those who try to harm them.  Some misguided ones even label people of other ethnicity, religion or nation as their enemies, thus fanning a lot of prejudice and spewing hatred.

In reality, our ‘true enemies’ are defilements that plague us.  Defilements such as greed, attachment, jealousy, anger, ill-will, and ignorance are the real causes of pain and suffering. One who has destroyed these defilements has cut off the root of suffering; he is henceforth known as an ‘Arahant’.  Sadhu!
