On Saturday 18 June, the people of Seri Kembangan were again fortunate to have the opportunity of offering alms-food to monks on ‘Pindacāra’. The monthly alms-round programme was started three years ago at the Jalan Besar market here to educate the local community on the right way to support Buddhist Sangha (monastic order).
Over the period, the locals have come to appreciate the significance of this meritorious act, and display great joy in seeing monks and offering alms. The incidents of bogus monks preying on the ignorant around town have almost disappeared as people have become knowledgeable about real and phoney monastic behaviour.
That particular weekend, we were honoured by the kind presence of Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero who led two younger bhikkhus on ‘Pindacāra’. The venerable Abbot of Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul was the personification of serenity and loving-kindness, which deeply pleased the Seri Kembangan crowd. Nalanda thanks Ven. Saranankara for his direct involvement in this pivotal public educational programme. This is what ‘leading from the front’ is all about!
