Happy Diwali

‘Diwali’ (or ‘Deepavali’ in Malaysia) is a Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of goodness over evil; and the victory of knowledge over ignorance.  Just as light dispels darkness, even so, wisdom dispels folly and foolishness.  Nalanda Buddhist Society wishes all our Hindu friends throughout the world a joyous ‘Diwali’.  May you enjoy delightful reunions with family, and cheerful meetings with friends.

4th Anniversary of Wisdom Park Development Committee

On Sunday 20 October, a simple celebration was held to commemorate the 4th anniversary of Wisdom Park Development Committee (WPDC).  Since its formation in October 2015, its members have been selflessly and tirelessly driving the development of Wisdom Park.  The Committee has been meeting monthly since its inception without a miss, thus keeping the construction schedule on track.

Silver Lining Day is back!

This Sunday 27 October, Nalanda Youth Centre will be hosting ‘Silver Lining Day’, a day dedicated to creating a caring community through acts of compassion and selflessness.  On this occasion, the youths will be extending care and attention to the children at the Mon Refugee Children Learning Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Nalanda Free School Appreciation Day

Established in June 2010, Nalanda Free School provides free academic tuition to needy Malaysian students aged 9 to 18.  With 42 volunteer tutors and an enrolment of 600 students, the Free School operates 32 classes – 5 days a week at Nalanda Centre in Serdang, NEO Centre in Happy Garden, Kuala Lumpur and NEO Centre in Taman Johor Jaya.

Spiritual cultivation at Eight-Precept Programme

On 13 October, the full-moon Uposatha Day of Assayuja month, over 120 participants devoted a day to Dhamma learning and contemplation in the Eight-Precept Programme at Nalanda Centre.  Led by Nalanda founder Bro. Tan, the preceptees learned in greater detail the purpose and practice of this noble observance.

1st anniversary of K. Sri Dhammananda Centre

Tomorrow (6 October) marks the first anniversary of the launching of K. Sri Dhammananda Centre in Sri Serdang.  The past 12 months have seen the Centre fully utilised for Dhamma camps, meditation retreats, and currently, as the premise for the Adult Dhamma School every Sunday.

On 29 September, Nalanda members from Sri Serdang and Kuala Lumpur Branches gathered to encourage one another to strengthen our Dhamma practice in the monthly Members’ Day.  Founder Bro. Tan was invited to address the gathering, where he updated members on the development of Wisdom Park.

A night of togetherness

On Saturday 21 September, Nalandian youths celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival at K. Sri Dhammananda Centre with good friends.  The evening started with a workshop conducted by Sis. Sunanda on ‘Meaningful Friendship’.  Through experiential activities, participants learned about the qualities of a true friend, as preached by the Buddha in the Mitta Sutta (AN7.35).

International Day of Non-violence

Today marks the 150th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948).  It is celebrated as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ in India; and since 2007, it was designated by the United Nations as the “International Day of Non-Violence”.   Gandhiji was revered by millions of Indians as ‘Mahātmā’, who worked indefatigably for the peaceful independence of India from colonial rule, while professing the ancient philosophy of non-violence, truthfulness, modesty and simplicity.

Youthful & joyful service at Wisdom Park

In September 2019, more than 130 youths took part in a day of joyful voluntary service in Wisdom Park.  They were participants of the recent ‘Dhamma-Living Camp for Young Adults’, an annual gathering of young Buddhists that truly inspires and energises many to practise Dhamma whole-heartedly.
