WACANA Conference set for 1 July

Nalanda Institute officers have been meeting for the past few months to prepare for WACANA 2017 – the premier Malaysian conference where the Sangha and laity gather to discuss pertinent issues that affect the Buddhist movement. This year’s WACANA Conference will be the fifth since 2007. It is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 1 July 2017, in Subang Jaya, Selangor. The theme for the conference is “The Buddha Word – Discovering the Essential”.

‘Open house’ in Sungai Petani

Over the weekend on 21 January, Nalandians in Kedah were busy cleaning and decorating NEO Centre Sungai Petani in preparation to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year.  Members and devotees worked harmoniously in making the place spick and span and truly welcoming!

Nalanda Education Workshop 2.0

In conjunction with Nalanda ‘Education Day’, 35 Nalanda officers gathered at Nalanda Centre on 12 December 2016 for the second-ever Nalanda Education Workshop.  The aim of the workshop was to chart and align the direction of all Nalanda education divisions in accordance with the ‘Nalanda Education Philosophy’.

Visit to Nalanda Book Café

On 13 January, Bro. Tan paid a visit to Nalanda Book Café in Sri Petaling to observe its staff training programme.  Several Nalandian youths who were volunteering there were pleasantly surprised by his presence.  Bro. Tan spent an hour chatting with the crew and volunteers to listen to their plans and aspirations.  He encouraged everyone to work gradually but diligently to fulfil their personal potential and realise noble aspirations at the same time.

Ajahn Chah memorial today

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Thousands of his disciples and students returned to Wat Pah Pong in Ubon Ratchathani to observe the occasion with meditation, Dhamma teaching, and merit making.  Among the senior disciples present were Luang Phor Liem, successor to Ajahn Chah as Abbot of Wat Pah Pong, and Luang Phor Sumedho, Ajahn Chah’s senior-most Western disciple and the first Abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat.

16 January 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing.  Venerable Ajahn was one of the most revered and influential Buddhist teachers in the modern era.  He was a doyen of the “forest tradition” who attracted many Thai and foreign practitioners to be ordained under him.

Temple visit to start the year

Nalanda leaders usually start the New Year by visiting Buddhist viharas in a tradition stretching back to 2004; and this year was no exception.  President Sis. Evelyn, Deputy President Bro. Charlie Teng, Honorary Secretary Bro. Pee, as well as Board Members Bro. Chan and Sis. Santī were among a group of Nalanda officers who paid a visit to the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul in the first week of January.
