Nalanda youths elect new leaders

On Sunday 24 July, young Nalandians came together for their Members’ Meeting at the Youth Centre in Sri Serdang.  The purpose of that meeting was to update members on the progress of Nalanda Youth Centre over the past year, and to discuss its future programmes.  Another important agenda was the re-election of office-bearers for the next 12-month term.

‘Family Fun Fair’ in Johor Bahru

Nalanda ‘Family Fun Fair’ (FFF) will be held for the second time in Johor Bahru on Sunday, 11 September.  It is held in aid of our ‘Education & Development Fund’.  Proceeds from the event will be channeled to support educational programmes of Nalanda Free School, Dhamma School and Library.

Talk at S.M.K. Desa Mahkota

On Friday 1 July, Director of Nalanda Dhamma School Sis. Sunanda Ong was invited to S.M.K. Desa Mahkota, Kuala Lumpur, to participate in ‘Program Kerohanian Sekolah’ for 300 sixth-form students.  Sis. Sunanda gave a talk on the ‘Importance of Having a Belief’ where she introduced the basics of Buddhist spirituality – that it was a way of life to reduce our distress, and ultimately to end all suffering.  She also spoke about the ‘Three Refuges’ and the Buddha’s ‘Middle Path’ to Enlightenment.

Thai forest monks visit Nalanda

On Saturday 2 July, Nalanda Centre was honoured by the presence of Luang Por Sophon, the Abbot of Wat Bueng Latthiwan, which is a branch monastery of Wat Nong Pah Pong in the Ajahn Chah Thai forest tradition.  As a boon, Luang Por Sophon was accompanied by Luang Por Nusin Santajitto (Abbot of Wat Katthaliwan), Luang Por Siri, Ajahn Thinakorn, Ajahn Pramual, Phra Jirapat and Phra Somchay.  The monastic entourage was on a 2-week visit through Malaysia.

Thailand hit by 11 bombs in 24 hours

From yesterday afternoon until this morning, suspected terrorists detonated 11 bombs in Southern Thailand within 24 hours, killing 4 people and injuring dozens more.  The bombing seemed to target mainly tourist centres of Hua Hin, Phuket, Phang-Nga, Surat Thani, and Trang.

Long Live Her Majesty

Today marks the auspicious 84th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand.  And since 1976, the nation has also been celebrating Mother’s Day on 12 August in honour of Her Majesty – she being the symbolic ‘mother’ to Thai people.  Nalandians felicitate the Royal Family and people of Thailand on this blessed occasion.  We also wish our Thai friends a gratifying celebration of Mother’s Day.  Sotthi.

Student officers’ meeting

Recently, newly-elected student officers had a special meeting to understand their roles in leading their peers at Nalanda Dhamma School.  The School is specially catered for teenagers aged between 13 and 17.  Every student is placed in either one of the two ‘houses’ – Naga House or Garuda House.  At the beginning of every year, members of each House elect their officers – a House Captain, Deputy Captain and two House Prefects – to lead the team.  This has been the tradition of Nalanda Dhamma School since its inception in 2005.

Dhamma talk by Ajahn Vajiro

On Saturday 25 June, Nalandians were honoured to have Venerable Ajahn Vajiro leading our weekly meditation session and delivering a Dhamma talk.  Ajahn reminded us to live a life of wisdom by ‘knowing’ and ‘upholding’ the truth.  He also urged Dhamma practitioners to constantly develop happiness independent of conditions by cultivating a sense of contentment.

Happy National Day, Singapore

Today marks the Republic of Singapore’s 51st anniversary of independence.  Due to our long, common history, Malaysia and Singapore share so many peculiar attributes.  Our two countries’ past had been uniquely intertwined; and so is our future.  A thriving and prosperous Singapore is good for Malaysia, and vice versa.
