Nalanda’s Johor Bahru Branch 3rd AGM

The 3rd Annual General Meeting of Nalanda Buddhist Society Johor Bahru Branch was held on Sunday, 6 March, at NEO Centre Johor Bahru.  During the meeting, members were given updates of the Branch’s development in 2015 and informed of the upcoming plans for this year.  The meeting was also attended by Nalanda’s Honorary Secretary Bro. Pee Che Yong, Assistant Secretary Sis. Mudita Chan, and Executive Committee Member Sis. Buddhini Tan.

Today is Nalanda Patron’s Day

“Nalanda Patron’s Day” is an annual programme to commemorate and appreciate all donors, benefactors and volunteers who have contributed to the growth of Nalanda over the years, and by extension, to the development of Buddhist education.  Nalanda Buddhist Society first observed “Patron’s Day” on 18 March 2007, in conjunction with the birth anniversary of our late teacher and spiritual adviser – Venerable Dr. Kirinde Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero.

Wisdom Park Committee 7th Meeting

The Wisdom Park Development Committee (WPDC) held its 7th meeting on Sunday, 6 March at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  Among other things, the Committee discussed in greater detail the components of Phase 1 development.  The 8th meeting of WPDC will be held on 31 March.  We thank all members of the Committee for their devotion and hard work put into developing Wisdom Park.  Sadhu anumodana.

Sungai Petani Branch holds AGM at new centre

The 3rd Annual General Meeting of Nalanda Buddhist Society Sungai Petani Branch was successfully held on Saturday, 5 March.  It was a particularly special and joyous occasion as this marked the first Annual General Meeting held at the newly-opened NEO Centre in Bandar Mutiara, Sungai Petani.  The meeting was also attended by Nalanda President Sis. Evelyn Chow, Deputy President Bro. Charlie Teng, and Board Member Bro. Vincent Lee.

Teenagers imbued with ‘Mettā’  

Nalanda Centre was a hive of activity from 13 to 15 March as 72 Nalanda Dhamma School students from Johor Bahru and the Klang Valley attended the ‘We are Nalandians’ Stay-in Programme.  The objectives of the programme were to (1) promote the Nalandian Spirit among students and facilitators; (2) deepening friendship; (3) learning to chant; and (4) improving meditation practice of the teenagers.

Uplifting gathering at 13th AGM

Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia held its 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday 13 March, at Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang.  It was well attended by members who were eager to discuss the Society’s development in 2015 and plans for the coming year.

‘Bhāvanā’ a fundamental daily activity

On Sunday 13 March, Sis. Buddhini Tan shared with us the importance of daily meditation as Buddhists.  She explained that practising Sīla (Morality) and Dāna (Generosity) alone were not enough as the Buddha also taught Bhāvanā (Mental cultivation) – leading to the purification of our minds through meditation.

Countdown to Dhamma Living Camp

On Saturday 12 March, Nalanda Centre was abuzz with activity as preparations for the upcoming Dhamma Living Camp reached its peak.  For several weeks now, the organising committee and camp facilitators have been continuously working towards the smooth-running and success of the camp.  Hard work and high spirits have been the order of the day for the dedicated team of volunteers, who have given nothing less than their genuine commitment and joyful effort.

Purify our actions through reflection

On Sunday 6 March Sis. Santi Cheang gave a sharing based on the Buddha’s advice to Rāhula at Ambalaṭṭikā  in the Ambalatthikārāhulovāda Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya 61).  In the sutta, the Buddha admonishes his young son, Venerable Rāhula, on why one should never utter a falsehood, not even in jest.  The Buddha exhorts Rāhula:  “So, too, Rāhula, when one is not ashamed to tell a deliberate lie, there is no evil, I say, that one would not do”.

Good response to new course

On Saturday 5 March, Nalanda Institute Malaysia welcomed about 50 participants to its new course, BPS 201 Intermediate-level Buddhist Studies in Mandarin.  The participants consisted mainly of students who had successfully completed last year’s BPS 101 – Basic Buddhist Studies.
