Pāli and Sanskrit scholars visit Nalanda

On Monday 22 February, a group of scholarly Sangha members came for a familiarization visit to Nalanda Centre. The monks are among the best throughout Sri Lanka in Pāli, Sanskrit and Sinhalese languages, having excelled in national Buddhist exams and obtained the first three places in those subjects.

Nalanda branches to hold AGMs in March

It’s that time of the year for Nalanda members to fulfill our constitutional duties again.  Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia will be holding our Annual General Meetings for 2016 early next month.  Kicking off the series of AGMs next weekend will be Nalanda branches in Sungai Petani, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, followed by the Serdang headquarters in the following weekend.

Volunteer inspired by ‘Pindacāra’

On Saturday 20 February, three venerable monks from Sentul Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple went on Pindacāra (alms-round) at Seri Kembangan morning market.  Nalanda volunteers arrived early to prepare for the Pindacāra and set up an information counter.  Their activity aroused much interest among the passers-by who wanted to know more about the significance of Pindacāra.

‘Sin Chew’ reports Dhamma School activity

The recently-held “Chap Goh Meh” celebrations at Nalanda Centre received more coverage in the local press.  Malaysia’s leading Chinese daily Sin Chew Jit Poh (星洲日报) reported the event in its Metro Edition on Wednesday, 24 February.  On 22 February, the leading English daily The Star had covered the same activity.

Festive gathering at Youth Centre

On Saturday 20 February, Nalandian youths held an enjoyable Lunar New Year gathering at Nalanda Youth Centre.  The potluck dinner was simple, yet the food tasted delicious in the company of good friends.  The evening’s activities included offerings to the Three Jewels and chanting, as well as a talk by special guest – Nalanda founder Bro Tan.

Recently, Bro.Tan and two members of the Wisdom Park Development Committee (WPDC) made another routine visit to the site.  Members of WPDC and Nalanda officers regularly visit the site to conduct surveys and to ensure it park’s cleanliness.

On Friday 12 February, Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch organized an “Open House” for the public at NEO Centre Bandar Mutiara in conjunction with the Lunar New Year celebration.  Members of the public began streaming in continuously as the Centre opened at 10 am.

Happy “Chap Goh Meh” 元宵节快乐!

Tomorrow, 22 February, will be the full-moon of the first lunar month, marking the end of the 15-day Lunar New Year celebrations.  “Chap Goh Meh”, which means ‘the fifteenth night’ in the local Hokkien dialect, is a significant day for the Chinese community in Malaysia.  Traditionally, families would celebrate the festival with dinner reunions, blessings and aspirations for a happy, harmonious and bountiful year ahead.

Investigating the cause of existence

On Thursday 4 February, a small group of Nalandian youths gathered just before the Chinese New Year holidays for an insightful learning on one of the Buddha’s profound teaching – the Paṭicca Samuppāda (Dependent Origination).  The session which was guided by Sis. Sunanda had everyone thinking about the cause of our ‘existence’.
