Replica of Buddhist masterpiece in Kuala Lumpur

The next time you visit Brickfields area, look out for a replica of the Buddhist masterpiece of Sanchi right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur!  The original structure of the ‘Torana’ (ceremonial gate) at the Great Stupa of Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, India was built by Emperor Asoka Moriya 2,300 years ago to honour the Lord Buddha.  It is one of the most elaborate and impressive Buddhist archeological findings in the world.

UPM Buddhist Society workshop at Nalanda

On Sunday 15 November, Persatuan Buddhist Universiti Putra Malaysia (PBUPM) organised a one-day facilitators’ workshop at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  It was conducted by UTAR lecturer Bro. Ananda Lee.  The aim of the workshop was to train facilitators for its ‘Annual Buddhist Camp’ at Bodhi Park, Shah Alam, in January next year.  Nalanda Centre is happy to accommodate members of PBUPM and welcome their use of its facilities for Buddhist education.  We wish them success in their upcoming camp.  Sadhu!

Vietnamese venerables visit Nalanda Centre

On Sunday 8 November, Venerable Thich Thai Hoa, Venerable Thich Phuoc Can and Venerable Thich Tu Niem from Vietnam visited Nalanda Centre.  They were greeted by Nalanda Buddhist Society President Sis. Evelyn Chow and other senior Nalanda officers who gave the venerables a tour of the building.

The passing of Ven. Dr. Dhammadinna

Life is impermanent indeed.  Venerable Dr. Dhammadinna Thero, a resident bhikkhu at the Buddhist Māha Vihāra Kuala Lumpur and a disciple of the late Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, passed away on Friday, 20 November in Malacca.  20 Nalandians led by President Sis. Evelyn attended the wake service to pay respects to the late venerable.

JB Dhamma School students sit for Examination

Twenty-four Nalanda Dhamma School students at NEO Centre Johor Bahru sat for their year-end examination on Sunday 15 November.  The teenagers, aged between 13 to 17 years, had been attending Dhamma classes throughout the year.  It was wonderful to see the students so well-behaved and eager to sit for the exam.  They were tested on their basic understanding of Buddhism. Dhamma School Director Sis. Sunanda was at NEO Centre to help oversee the smooth running of the examination.

Nalanda youths paint their Centre

On Saturday 14 November, several Nalanda youths took it upon themselves to give the Nalanda Youth Centre a facelift.  The centre is a lively and ‘happening’ place.  It is well used by about 340 Free School students for their tuition classes on weekdays and by Nalanda youths for their activities during the weekends.  With so much going on, the premises was beginning to show signs of wear and tear.  So to keep up its maintenance, several youths volunteered to give it a fresh coat of paint and some minor touch-up.

Site survey of Wisdom Park

On Sunday 8 November, members of the Wisdom Park Development Committee visited the site in Kuala Kubu Bharu to view the terrain and surroundings.  Land survey there, which began in late August, was completed in October.  A ‘Master Development Plan’ for Wisdom Park is being drafted by the specially-appointed Development Committee comprising 11 members – 4 professionals, 4 representatives of the Buddhist community, and 3 Nalanda Buddhist Society officers.

Light of Dhamma within us

On Tuesday 10 November, Bro. Tan gave a Dhamma talk in conjunction with Deepavali and the visit by members of Firefly Mission Singapore.  Bro. Tan said that Deepavali is celebrated as the Festival of Lights; but there must also be a ‘Light of Dhamma’ within us.  It is a ‘guiding light’ which we can depend on to help ourselves and others.

Nottingham University Buddhist Society workshop

On Thursday 12 November, Nalanda Dhamma School Director Sis. Sunanda Ong conducted a Dhamma workshop for members of Nottingham University Buddhist Society, Semenyih,  in conjunction with its 6th anniversary.  Sis. Sunanda spoke about positive transformation, highlighting the fact that true transformation can only come about when education is accompanied by cultivation.  She impressed upon the students the importance of putting their Dhamma knowledge into practice if they wanted to see tangible results in their lives.

‘Sangha Day’ celebrated with joy

‘Sangha Day’ at Nalanda Centre yesterday was a joyous occasion and celebrated with much gratitude and reverence for monks and nuns who played a vital role in the preservation of Buddha-Sāsanā.   Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan said in his talk, “Today we have the Buddha’s teachings because it has been passed down through generations of monks, nuns and lay people, and for that we are forever grateful.”
