Prayers for Air-crash Casualties

On Tuesday 24 March, another tragic air-crash took place in Europe, killing all 150 passengers and crew on board Germanwings flight 9525.  The ill-fated Airbus A320 was en route from Barcelona, Spain to Dusseldorf, Germany when it crashed in the French Alps.  Nalanda members offer our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the casualties.  We empathize with your loss and grief here in Malaysia.  We also offer prayers for the victims of this tragedy.  May they rest in Peace.

UPM Buddhist Alumni AGM held at Nalanda

On Sunday 15 March, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Buddhist Society Alumni (PBUPM-A) held their 9th Annual General Meeting at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  The Management Committee duly presented the annual activities report at the meeting for members’ approval.  The Alumni has been active in keeping contact with UPM Buddhist graduates and inspiring them to further their Dhamma practice.  Nalanda wishes PBUPM-A continued progress and success in the coming years.  Sadhu anumodana!

Remembering Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, 1923 – 2015

This morning I woke up to the sad news of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s passing.  Although he had been unwell and hospitalized since February, with his frail condition and declining health seemingly irreparable, yet, the broadcast of his death still tugged at my heart.  Singapore woke up a grieving nation bereaved of her founding father; the world has lost another legendary statesman.

Buddhist Composer Imee Ooi visits Nalanda

Ms. Imee Ooi, one of Malaysia’s foremost Buddhist composer and vocalist, paid a visit to Nalanda Centre on Saturday, 21 March.  Imee, who was accompanied by her colleague Mr. Chai Yu, spent two hours touring the Centre and having discussions with Nalanda officers.  They later made a courtesy call on Nalanda Founder, Bro Tan.

Inauguration of new BGF Centre

On Saturday 7 March, the new Buddhist Gem Fellowship (BGF) Centre located in Ara Damansara, Selangor, was inaugurated in a gleaming ceremony graced by the presence of many Sangha members from locally and abroad.  The Guest of Honour was Y.B. Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, the Selangor State Executive Council Member.

Junior Dharma School opens in Sri Serdang

On Sunday 15 March, Nalanda Dharma School (N.D.S.) marked another important milestone with the opening of the much-anticipated ‘Nalanda Junior Dharma School’ based at Nalanda House, Sri Serdang.  This is the fourth Dharma School operated by Nalanda, following the establishment of N.D.S. in 2005, the Junior School in Happy Garden, and the recently-opened teenagers school in Johor Bahru.

Ven. Sanghasena visits Nalanda Centre

On Friday 13 March, Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang was honoured by the visit of Venerable Sanghasena Nāyaka Thero from Ladakh, India.  The Director of Nalanda Centre, Sis. Nandinī Tan, and Head of Department for Buddhist & Pāli Studies, Sis. Sandy Lim, hosted Ven. Sanghasena and two accompanying Ladakhi students on a tour of Nalanda Cente.

‘The Sun’ interviews Nalanda Free School

On Friday 13 March, Nalanda Free School Chief Coordinator Sis. Nandinī Tan was interviewed by reporters from ‘The Sun’  about the programme.  The “Nalanda Free School Project” was initiated in 2010 by a group of dedicated volunteers to provide free tuition to academically-weak and needy students living in and around Seri Kembangan.

New Board of Management Elected at A.G.M.

At Nalanda Buddhist Society’s 12th Annual General Meeting (A.G.M.) held on 8 March 2015, Nalanda members elected a new Board of Management to lead and oversee the Society’s continued growth and development.  Heading the Board of Management is Sis. Evelyn Chow, who was elected Nalanda’s fourth leader and first female President.  Bro. Charlie Teng was elected the Deputy President, while Bro. Pee Che Yong is the new Honorary Secretary.  Sis. Margaret Ng was appointed the Honorary Treasurer.
