What burning ‘paper money’ really meant

During a funeral ceremony in ancient China, paper-made models of houses, sedan chairs, treasure chests, clothes, daily utensils, and even effigies of servants, were burnt as the cortege was leaving home for burial in the cemetery.

New-Moon Uposatha Service

On Monday 31 March, devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre for the New-moon Uposatha (Observance) Day pūja and chanting.  The day also marked the conclusion of 7-day prayers for the casualties of MH370, which started since the broadcast of the heartbreaking official news on 24 March on the crash of the airplane in the Indian Ocean.

Service Sunday talk on ‘Wise Reflections’

On 30 March, the Director of Pustaka Nalanda Bro. Ananda Fong delivered a Dhamma Talk on “Wise Reflections according to the Buddha’s Teaching”.  The talk aimed at deepening devotees’ understanding of what is meant by ‘Reflection’, one of Nalanda’s Eight Core Values.

Wonderful Learning Trip to National Science Centre

On Saturday 22 March, Nalanda Free School organized a learning trip for secondary school students to the National Science Centre in Kuala Lumpur.  The aim of the trip is to bring education beyond the boundaries of the classroom and to expose the students to science.

‘Pattidāna’ – Dedication of Merits

‘Dedication of Merits’ is a Buddhist practice whereby one performs a noble, meritorious deed in kind memory of one’s departed relatives.  One performs such wholesome deeds in honour of loved ones who had passed away by thinking: “Idam me ñātinam hotu, sukhitā hontu ñātayo.” – “Let this merit accrue to my departed relatives; may they be happy!”

A Taste of Public Service in the U.S.A.

New Youth Library ready for use

For the past few weeks, Pustaka Nalanda librarians have been busy cataloging and arranging books at the new Youth Library located at Level 3 of Nalanda Youth Centre**.  Before this, the Youth Library temporarily occupied ‘Sucinta Room’, which will now house the Chinese Books Section instead.

Phagguna Full-moon Uposatha Pūja

Saturday, 15 March was the Phagguna Full-moon Uposatha Day.  As customary, devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre for the 8pm evening Uposatha Day Pūja and chanting.  Many practitioners also regularly observe the 8-precepts on New-moon and Full-moon days to heighten their spiritual awareness and appreciation.
