Dharma School Facilitators’ Annual Retreat

An annual 4-day retreat for Nalanda Dharma School facilitators was held from 2 – 5 November in Pulau Ketam, Selangor, with active participation by 16 facilitators and trainees. During the retreat, the School’s performance in 2013 were objectively reviewed, while the 2014 School structure and programmes were discussed.

Firefly Mission’s visit to Nalanda Centre

On Monday 4 November, 90 members of Firefly Mission Singapore led by its President Dr. Ng Yee Kong descended upon Nalanda Centre for a half-day visit.  Our Singaporean kinsmen were on the way home after participating in a Kathina Tour to Northern Malaysia.

Another Joyful Pindacāra on 2 November

The monthly Pindacāra Programme at Taman O.U.G. and Happy Garden morning markets was joyfully undertaken on 2 November with the most Venerable B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero leading three other monks on the alms-round.  Monthly Pindacāra there has been running continuously for 18 months and it has attracted a loyal and devoted crowd of supporters, besides inspiring more new donors every time.  Young and old, market-goers and stall operators alike, everyone feels the joy of giving alms to passing monks.  Read more

Visitors to Nalanda Centre

On Sunday 3 November, Nalanda Centre welcomed several groups of visitors, both monks and laity.  In the morning, we received senior officers from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) – Vice President RAdm Dato’ Danyal Balagopal Abdullah (Rtd) and Treasurer Mr. Yong Choo Kong. They were met by Bro.Tan and brought around for a building tour.  Also at the meeting were Datin Seri Mah Ming Yuet and Bro. Chim Siew Choon, President of Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia.

Visitors from SMJK Kwang Hua, Klang

Article & Photographs by Gan Jia Cheng On Friday 1 November, 40 teachers and students from SMJK Kwang Hua Klang Buddhist Society visited Nalanda Centre for an excursion to gain better understanding and more exposure to the Buddhist community in Malaysia.  They were warmly received by Sis. Nandini, Youth Leader Bro. Yeo Disheng, and other Nalanda Officers.

Nalanda Team joins Kathina Celebrations in Johor

It's the 'Kathina' season whereby the laity are offering alms and requisites to the Sangha members who completed another ‘annual rains retreat’ (Vassana).  The Nalanda Johor Bahru Team is happily taking part in several such celebrations in Johor.  On 20 October, the team was at Santi Forest Monastery in Ulu Tiram for its Kathina Day.  On 27 October, the team headed to Dhamma-Light Meditation Centre in Api Api, Pontian, for the celebrations there.  Next the team will be going to Santisukharama in Kota Tinggi for its Kathina Day this Sunday.  Sadhu anumodana!

3 days of celebrations and tribute to a humble monk

The Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur was a hive of activities over the last few days as more than 1,000 devotees thronged the vihāra to pay tribute to the Sangha, in particular to its popular Abbot, the Most Venerable Sri Saranankara Nāyaka Thero.

Tribute to Venerable Sri Saranankara Nāyaka Thero

28 October 2013 marks the auspicious 60th birthday of the Most Venerable Bootawatte Sri Saranankara Nāyaka Thero.  Nalanda Buddhist Society records our felicitations and deep appreciation to Ven. Sri Saranankara for his tireless efforts in promoting the welfare of Malaysian people and in cultivating the spirit of social service and unity amongst Buddhists.

An uplifting Nalanda Members’ Day

Nalanda Buddhist Society members congregated at our ‘spiritual home’ – Nalanda Centre – on Saturday 26 October for another reunion-like Members’ Day gathering.  This round, new members from Nalanda Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru branches also joined the assembly for the first time.  They received a warm and encouraging welcome from other Nalandians.
