Positive Thinking

On 23 September 2012, for the first time, the Nalanda Youth Centre took charge of the programme for the National Service (NS) Trainees’ Service Sunday.  The theme was ‘Positive Thinking’.  The NS trainees were encouraged to have positive thoughts, as mind is the forerunner of all things.  They were also reminded not to dwell too much on the past, and instead to always aspire to be better in the near future and to make decisions wisely.  It was a lively and vibrant session as the trainees participated with enthusiasm and gusto!

Robes Offering Ceremony

According to Buddhist tradition, the period from July to October every year is when Buddhist monastics observe the “Vassa” or ‘rains retreat’.  In ancient times, the Indian monsoon season prevented Buddhist monks and nuns from wandering.  Thus, the Buddha instructed His disciples to temporarily settle in a monastery for three months, and to apply themselves strictly to their spiritual practice.

Annual Gardening Day

Since Nalanda started this Community Initiative to green our environment in 2009, we have slowly transformed our surroundings by building the Taman Sari Nandanavana, planting trees and flowery plants to beautify the compounds outside Nalanda Centre and Nalanda House. This annual outdoor project is part of our greening effort to ‘practise’ our love and care to the environment that we live in.  This is also in line with the physical well-being awareness that we are cultivating.

Giving with Understanding

Having right understanding when offering alms and performing wholesome deeds purifies our actions. On 1 September, we organised the third monthly pindacāra (alms-round) at Taman O.U.G. morning market.  This time around, the public were much more aware of alms-giving; some had even prepared food in advance to offer to the monks.  It was heart-warming to see that consistent efforts to organise this programme is leading to such positive responses from the public.

Visit by friends from Metta Lodge Johor

After a fruitful discussion and healthy dinner at Nalanda Book Cafe, it was smiles all round! It was a delightful weekend spent with our new friends from Metta Lodge, Johor Bahru.  Most being Sunday Dhamma School teachers, the main theme of the sharing sessions centred around the Nalanda Dharma School education model and how it works.  Indeed, “the heart of education is education of the heart!”
