‘Sangha Day’ is an important occasion at Nalanda for the lay community to honour the virtues and contributions of the Māha Sangha (monastic order) in preserving and propagating Buddhism. This is an occasion to express gratitude to monks and nuns who strive diligently to bring happiness and peace to mankind. Devotees in return offer robes, food, medicinal support, educational support, and other requisites to them.

This meritorious event, which has been held yearly for the past 8 years, is aimed at reinforcing the connection and support between the Sangha and lay communities. In the presence of over 100 venerable monks and nuns, the Buddhist community made offerings to the Maha Sangha, with hearts of joy and gratitude.

On 16 September 1963, a country named ‘Malaysia’ was born of that aspiration. In August 1965, Singapore left the federation to become an independent republic. The other 13 states have continued to persevere as a nation until today.

An aftershock of 4.9 struck 19 minutes later. The earthquake’s epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) south-west of Marrakesh, and caused severe damage for hundreds of miles.
