Indonesia Sangha members visit Nalanda

On 3 to 4 February, Nalanda members were privileged to host 11 monks from the ‘Sangha Theravada Indonesia’ (STI) and 5 Indonesian friends on a visit to Nalanda.  The monks hailed from various provinces across the Indonesian islands, where they have been serving the local communities under the guidance of the Sangha Governance Council of STI.

Nalanda leaders pay last respects to Ven. Master Hsing Yun

On Sunday 12 February, 35 Nalanda leaders and members paid their last respects to the late Ven. Master Hsing Yun at Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple (佛光山東禪寺). Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters at Fo Guang Shan in paying tribute to a great monk who stood as a beacon of inspiration to the Buddhist community, illuminating the world with his wisdom and compassion.

‘Bhavana Day’ with Ven. Jutipañño

On Saturday 11 February, Venerable Jutipañño Mahāthero, Abbot of Dhamma Light Meditation Centre, will lead ‘Bhāvanā Day’– a one-day meditation retreat in Mandarin – at Nalanda Education and Outreach Centre in Happy Garden KL.  Registration is now closed.  All registered participants are reminded to arrive at NEO KL by 8.30am this Saturday. Please wear suitable and comfortable clothing, and bring along a shawl or jacket to keep warm.

Pindacāra during Lunar New Year festivities

On Saturday 4 February, the community at O.U.G. and Happy Market gathered to perform the meritorious deed of dāna in support of the Mahā Sangha. Even as vendors and marketgoers are busy preparing for the last few days of the Lunar New Year festivities, many stepped forward to offer food and requisites at Pindacāra (monks on alms-round), experiencing the joy of giving especially to those worthy of honour.

Pray for victims of devastating earthquakes in Türkiye & Syria

On Monday 6 February, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southeast Türkiye near the city of Gaziantep, at 4.17am local time.  Just 12 hours later, a second 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck 130 kilometers to the north, in the Elbistan district.  The deadly earthquakes left a trail of destruction in seven Turkish provinces and northern Syria.

Passing of Ven. Master Hsing Yun

It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we observe the passing of Most Venerable Master Hsing Yun on Sunday 5 February 2023, at the age of 96. Born in Jiangsu Province, China, he received full ordination at the age of 15 and dedicated his life to propagate the Dhamma as a global citizen.

Today is the full-moon day of the first lunar month, marking the celebration of “Chap Goh Meh” (literally, ‘the fifteenth night’) in the local Hokkien dialect. On this significant day for the Chinese community, families traditionally mark the festival with another round of reunion dinners and make aspirations for a happy and peaceful year ahead.
